Join us in welcoming Matthew Helmondollar as the new 4-H Youth Development Agent for Harrison County! No stranger to WVU Extension, Matthew is a WVU alum with several years of various Extension experience, serving as a 4-H ECI, a WVU Extension summer intern in Mercer County, and even working with the MINION Project.

As Harrison County’s 4-H agent, Matthew hopes to expand opportunities for young people through leadership development, outdoor education and hands-on learning experiences. Welcome to the team! 💛💙🍀

Join our experts on August 19 to learn all about medicinal plants! From 6-8 p.m. at the Mylan Park High Tunnel in Morgantown, participants will learn the basics of growing and processing a variety of medicinal plants for both home and commercial production. Stay tuned for more info on additional classes throughout the year! 🌱

This month’s flower from the Flower Power Garden Calendar is the zinnia! Known for their bold colors and long flowering season, zinnias are easy and quick to grow from seed or transplant.

Because of their brilliant color, types of blooms, and heights, zinnias are ideal for borders, beds, and floral arrangements. Their flowers come in many colors, and sometimes even a combination! Zinnias also attract pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, thus supporting a healthy ecosystem. They’re even somewhat deer-resistant and relatively pest-free, making them ideal for any garden. 🌱

MINION Program application deadline extended to August 20! 💻

In this project, students learn how to design and conduct real research and evaluations that help Extension programs measure success. Emily Arbogast, former participant and current GA for the MINION Program, partnered with Wetzel County 4-H to assess the trail at their 4-H camp and how it serves the public.

Along the way, Emily gained valuable experience. "This was a very beneficial experience for me and my future career goals," she said. "My favorite part was learning how evaluation works, seeing the various projects happening in different counties, and gaining hands-on experience with Extension work.”
