Announcing our upcoming TR Swiftwater Rescue Technician Series class December 10,11,12 as part of a 6-day water rescue series.

Due to river generation availability along the Catawba River, we are offering the upcoming TR Swiftwater Rescue class at BOTH the WPCC Regional Training Center in Morganton, NC AND the NC Emergency Swiftwater & Flood Rescue Training Center in New London, NC (Albemarle region).

Our partners at Stanly Community College and NC OSFM have generously offered to bring our instructional staff & students to experience the new training facility.
Students will need to arrange for lodging in the New London region if not commuting from Burke Co..

Just hours before large-scale flooding occurred throughout WNC last week, over 12 water rescue teams & 100+ participants from across the Carolinas participated in the 2026 Burke Co. Surface & Swiftwater SAR Joint Readiness Exercise. Our teams were presented with numerous real-time search and swiftwater rescue problems managed by an Incident Management Team and Communications Team. Crews were searching areas of Lake James using sonar and Underwater Remote Operated Vehicles, along with K9's, drones, and boat operations along the Catawba River at Bridgewater Dam. Numerous rope rescue incidents and night ops. made for challenging rescue problems. We thank our partners at Burke & Caldwell Co. EM, Duke Energy Hydro-Central, and WPCC staff and voluteer victims for their dedication and assistance for providong this unique training experience. It's going to be a busy 27 hours for our Regional Emergency Services Training Center as we welcome over 15 Swiftwater Rescue teams, Incident Management teams, K9 handlers, and Field Communication Specialists from throughout the states of North Carolina and South Carolina to our 2026 Burke County Water Search and Rescue exercise. Please be aware of numerous water rescue teams moving throughout the Catawba River and Lake James region. Feel free to come by and check out all the action going on until 6:00 p.m. tomorrow night
