Last week, we had the joy of celebrating the retirement of our beloved former Executive Director, Browning!🎉

Her dedication, leadership, and passion for literacy have left a lasting impact on Burke Literacy Council and the countless lives she touched along the way. While we will miss seeing her in the office, we are so grateful for the years she devoted to our mission and community.

Please join us in wishing Browning a happy and well-deserved retirement filled with new adventures, relaxation, and plenty of time to enjoy the things she loves most.

Thank you, Browning, for everything you have done for Burke Literacy Council. Your legacy will continue to inspire us for years to come. 💛

We are excited to finally offer childcare for our evening students and hope this helps more families continue learning English together.

Would you or someone you know be interested in attending a free informational session with the Pisgah Legal Services team?

Topics include:
✔️ “Know Your Rights”
✔️ Interactions with law enforcement
✔️ Possible legal pathways for residency and citizenship

Our hope is to give individuals an opportunity to ask questions, better understand their options, and learn more about available resources and support services.

We are also exploring future workshops and citizenship support classes that would help participants prepare for the English, reading, writing, and civics portions of the citizenship process while connecting them with trusted legal guidance and resources.

We would also love your feedback on what days and times would work best for you so we can schedule this event for a time that most people are able to attend

Learning English goes beyond the classroom!

At Burke Literacy Council, our ESL teachers love finding creative, hands-on ways to make learning fun and practical. From studying car parts with diagrams to heading outside and identifying them on a real car, students get the chance to practice English in everyday situations while enjoying the beautiful weather!

*Morning ESL classes will end on May 28th for the summer and will resume after summer break.*

Evening ESL classes will continue as usual!

¡Aprender inglés va más allá del salón de clases!

En Burke Literacy Council, nuestros maestros de ESL siempre buscan maneras creativas y dinámicas de hacer que aprender inglés sea divertido y práctico. Desde estudiar las partes de un carro con diagramas hasta salir afuera para identificarlas en un carro real, los estudiantes tienen la oportunidad de practicar inglés en situaciones cotidianas mientras disfrutan del buen clima.

Lecciones interactivas como estas ayudan a desarrollar confianza, fortalecer vocabulario y hacer que el aprendizaje cobre vida.

Last Thursday, Mr. Scott took his ESL class outside to enjoy the fresh air while learning together. It was a wonderful way to celebrate Earth Day by connecting language, learning, and the world around us! 💚

We love seeing our impact in action!

Today, a mom shared her experience at Hannah's Wash Dry Fold in Valdese—her kids loved the Laundromat Literacy corner this past weekend!
She even sent us a photo of them enjoying the space (shared with permission). ✨

Because while the laundry spins, young minds are growing 🧠
