Week 6: Building Toward the Future🌟

What a meaningful way to wrap up our Casa De Open Door program!

On Monday, our students reflected on their near and long-term goals and the dreams they hope to accomplish. A huge thank you to Dessert First for sponsoring delicious brownies that made our day even sweeter!

On Wednesday, students reflected on their six-week journey and celebrated all they learned and experienced together. They enjoyed a scavenger hunt around downtown Morganton with Ms. Rachel and Ms. Natalie, followed by a delicious lunch from The FireTruck Catering LLC, another amazing sponsor. Thank you for coming out to us and creating such a special experience for our students!

We also had the privilege of hearing from F***y, Jimmy, and Jeronimo, who shared their stories and words of encouragement as our students continue their education journey. They reminded students to keep learning, take advantage of resources like Casa De Open Door, continue working toward their goals, and never give up.

During his message, Jimmy shared a powerful reminder connected to the meaning behind our program’s name: Casa De Open Door—“a house with an open door.” He reminded students that even when one door closes, new opportunities and new doors can open. The important thing is to keep moving forward, believe in yourself, and never give up. ❤️

To celebrate completing the six-week program, we treated our students to a school supply shopping trip. Each student received $50 toward supplies to help them start the new school year prepared and confident. We are so proud of all they accomplished!

¡Semana 6: Construyendo hacia el Futuro! 🌟

¡Qué hermosa manera de cerrar nuestro programa Casa De Open Door!

El Lunes, nuestros estudiantes reflexionaron sobre sus metas a corto y largo plazo y los sueños que esperan alcanzar. Un enorme agradecimiento a Dessert First por patrocinar unos deliciosos brownies que hicieron nuestro día aún más especial.

El Miércoles, nuestros estudiantes reflexionaron sobre su experiencia durante estas seis semanas y celebraron todo lo que aprendieron y vivieron juntos. Disfrutaron de una búsqueda del tesoro por el centro de Morganton junto a Ms. Rachel y Ms. Natalie, seguida de un delicioso almuerzo de The FireTruck Catering LLC, otro de nuestros increíbles patrocinadores. ¡Gracias por visitarnos y crear una experiencia tan especial para nuestros estudiantes!

💚 Week 5: Community Recreation!

This week, our students explored the many ways to enjoy the outdoors and connect with our community.

On Monday, we visited Little Guatemala, and we are so grateful to this wonderful sponsor for treating our students to delicious pastries and drinks. Everyone loved spending time together in their beautiful outdoor seating area. ☕🥐

On Wednesday, students enjoyed a guided nature walk at Oak Hill Community Park & Forest with Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina. A huge thank-you to our guides, Erin and Matt, for creating such a welcoming and comfortable environment where students felt encouraged to ask questions and engage with the natural world. The smiles in these photos say it all—we had an amazing time! 🌿

After our hike, we were treated to an incredible lunch from Blackbox Sandwiches, another one of our amazing sponsors. WOW—thank you for the generous sandwiches, chips, and thoughtful hospitality that helped our group refuel after our adventure. We truly appreciate your kindness and support! 💛

To wrap up the day, Erin joined us back in the classroom to answer students’ questions and help them reflect on everything they had learned about Oak Hill and the importance of caring for our natural spaces.

We highly recommend visiting all of our sponsors and experiencing a guided tour with Foothills Conservancy for yourself. You won’t be disappointed!

💚 ¡Semana 5: Recreación Comunitaria!

Esta semana, nuestros estudiantes exploraron las muchas maneras de disfrutar la naturaleza y conectar con nuestra comunidad.

El lunes visitamos Little Guatemala, y estamos muy agradecidos con este maravilloso patrocinador por consentir a nuestros estudiantes con deliciosos pasteles y bebidas. Todos disfrutaron de compartir juntos en la hermosa área al aire libre. ☕🥐

El miércoles, los estudiantes participaron en una caminata guiada en Oak Hill Community Park & Forest con Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina. ¡Un enorme agradecimiento a nuestros guías, Erin y Matt, por crear un ambiente tan acogedor y cómodo, donde los estudiantes se sintieron motivados a hacer preguntas y a conectarse con la naturaleza! Here's a look back at Week 4: Community Wellness! ☀️

Another week full of learning, exploring, and making connections throughout Burke County!

A big thank you to Thornwell Books, one of our amazing sponsors, for treating our students to delicious cookies from Ugly Duckling Bakery. We also enjoyed visiting Comma Performing Arts Center, where students explored the auditorium and admired the beautiful Fresco painting.

On Wednesday, students spent time cuddling cats at The Mews Herald, toured Collett Street Recreation Center, and learned about the many programs and resources available to our community.

Lunch at Town Tavern gave everyone another opportunity to practice ordering in English, and while waiting, students had a blast in the arcade! We wrapped up the day with a relaxing walk along the Greenway. 🌿

Learning English is about so much more than the classroom—it's about building confidence, creating connections, and discovering the community around us.
