Why is spelling important??🌱 It leads to FAR deeper word knowledge than reading. Reading requires the recognition of a sequence of letters, but a word's spelling must be DEEPLY encoded into long-term memory, with consolidated knowledge of several word elements (sounds, spelling patterns, morphological/grammatical units). These elements ALL inform the representation of a word in one's brain. And ALL of this knowledge feeds back into one's ability to both read and write with accuracy, fluency, and creativity.
So the next time someone questions why spelling is important, claiming explicit spelling education is "no longer needed" in light of current technology, just remember: "if you can spell it, you can read it," but it doesn't go both ways. Working on spelling is working on literacy skills from the bottom-up. Skipping spelling in favor of "reading only" merely scratches the surface of what a student can (and should) learn in order to develop a strong command of the written language.
Want to help your child avoid literacy FOMO? Teach spelling!✍️
