Morganton opens summer tennis season
The Morganton Parks and Recreation Department’s youth summer tennis team hosted Boone on June 26 at Freedom Park to open the season, falling by a narrow 3-2 margin.
Morganton gained both of its wins from No. 2 singles player Roselyn Siong (4-2 and 4-0). No. 4 Luke Zimmerman lost 3-8, and Nos. 1 and 3 players James Siong and Liam Cogan dropped matches by 8-0 scores. Morganton’s Will and Emma Zimmerman also played an exhibition match.
“We were missing some of our best players,” Morganton coach Wayne Giese said, “but that has been happening for the past couple of years due to vacations, camps, etc. We will keep trying to hone skills and improve throughout the summer, but the biggest thing is just these kids getting a racquet in their hands and having fun playing the sport.”
Morganton will next make the trip to Boone for a rematch (date TBD).

Oh man, the French Open is so much fun to watch. Some really competitive matches.
The NCSSM-Morganton boys tennis team will be hosting Owen HS on April 23rd at Freedom Park starting at 4 pm. Grab a lawn chair and witness some great students and athletes.
