Prepare for Hurricane Isaias
Dr. Pam Knox, Director of the UGA Weather Network, is encouraging Georgians, especially those in western and southwest Georgia, to begin preparing now for impacts from Hurricane Isaias.
Although the storm is not currently expected to pass directly over Georgia, our location on the right side of the storm could still bring significant impacts. Southwest Georgia could experience tropical storm force winds, heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and the potential for tornadoes, particularly within spiral rain bands.
Dr. Knox recommends taking advantage of the good weather ahead of the storm to make preparations, including:
• Securing or bringing inside items that could become airborne
• Moving equipment, livestock, and feed away from low lying areas
• Preparing for possible power outages from downed trees and power lines
• Staying alert for changing weather conditions and possible tornado warnings
Impacts could begin in southwest Georgia as early as Friday, with rainfall potentially arriving sooner in southern portions of the state.
As Dr. Knox noted, impacts from tropical systems can extend well beyond the forecast cone, so it is important to continue monitoring the forecast as it develops.
