Properly spacing steel off of forms.

Concrete chairs & blocks (dobbies) cost less than 50¢ each. Your steel crew is being LAZY, are only saving $10-20 per pool and are delivering a substandard service.

They are not doing you any favors. ACI 350 states: cast against earth 3 inches (75 mm) minimum clearance for reinforcement.

The steel “sky bar” is placed directly against the form. As soon as these forms are stripped, there will be ZERO clearance and the bar will be exposed.

It helps to know your trade & the codes, better than your subcontractors - who are always looking for an easier way out.

Education is the only way you’ll know more than your subcontractors, who have been doing it wrong for decades!

Most building codes require that PVC pipes be protected from UV exposure.

PVC pipe manufacturers also state this in their product literature technical cut sheets.

UV protection is easily done with an enclosure, or by wrapping or painting the pipes.

PVC pipe protection is REQUIRED by specific codes in CA (CPC 906.1) and FL (FBC 454.1.6.4).

In most other states it is required by “catch all” IPC section 303.2 that states products are to be installed “per the manufacturer’s specifications.”

The Uniform Plumbing Code, section 312.14 requires painting exposed PVC pipes with a latex enamel paint or 0.04” thick pipe wrap.

Okay, let’s hear all of the excuses why you don’t paint your exposed PVC pipes.

You went ahead and did it anyway…

Did you know that both TCNA and ANSI A108 REQUIRE all outdoor stone & tile installations to have 95% contact between the tile/stone and thinset/mortar bed?

Leaving the comb marks in place from the trowel gauge marks will not allow you to achieve 95%.

On vanishing edge walls, water will migrate through these capillaries, eventually carrying calcium to the surface at the tiniest crack.

What does a client think when they see these calcium deposits?

That the wall or pool is leaking…

ACI 318 vs ACI 350
What’s the big deal?

ACI 318 1.4.8 states: “this code does not apply to the construction of tanks or reservoirs.” That definitely describes a pool. The commentary of the section refers to the use of ACI 350.

ACI 350 is for the design & engineering of concrete vessels containing liquids.

The environmental exposure classifications are outlined in ACI 350 section 4.2.

Even when selection the very minimum environmental exposures outlined in 4.2, you’ll see in section 4.3 that the minimum compression value of the concrete is 4,000 PSI with a maximum water/cement (w:cm) ratio of 0.45.

Even though an engineer may be able to demonstrate that the structure could perform with a lesser compressive value of concrete, 4,000 PSI is still required to protect the reinforcement from corrosion.

ACI 350 7.7.1 also specifies a minimum clearance to earth of 3- inches and 2-inches of coverage on the water side. Add the thickness of #4 overlapping bars, and the minimum shell thickness is 6-inches. Anything less, is a violation of the codes.

SHOTCRETE FAILURES

Understanding the process can make or break the success of a shotcrete pool. Too many pool contractors do not understand concrete science or shotcrete.

Because of this lack of understanding, they cannot critically evaluate the practices of their shotcrete subcontractors.

Subcontractors will say “we’ve always done it this way,” or “we’ve never had a problem before.” Both may be true, however there are common bad practices that compromise the integrity of the process.

BAD PRACTICES:

1. Hands or fingers in the stream of the shotcrete or squeezing the nozzle.

This separates the aggregates from the cement paste and slows down the velocity - resulting in weaker concrete.

2. Not shooting the horizontal surfaces or coves before the walls or benches.

Failing to place the floor or coves first allows the loose trimmings from the vertical walls and benches to fall into the floors & under the steel.

If this material is still plastic, it can be VIBRATED into place. However, most of the time the wall materials have stiffened & set up, so trimmings become waste materials. It is virtually impossible to shovel out this waste from under the floor steel.

This is also why spa benches & floors are notoriously sources of reoccurring problems.

3. Pacing trimmings into benches, walls or floors.

Once the concrete has stiffened it cannot be thrown into benches, floors or walls. It is a waste product that needs to be hauled off site.

If your recently shot project looks really clean, ask yourself “where are all of the trimmings?” There should be piles of waste around the entire pool.

4. No one is using a vi****or.

Most placed concrete is not self-consolidating. Vibration is required to consolidate it & remove air pockets & voids.

Walking on this material (aka: “stompcrete”) does not consolidate it.

5. Excessive foot traffic on freshly placed materials.

Walking all over freshly placed materials - another version of stompcrete, alters the compressive value & water to cement ratios.

6. “Flashing” the floor at the end of the job.

They’re not doing you a favor - they’re cleaning out their pump & hoses in your pool floor.

The water used to rinse their hopper & hoses alters the cement to water ratio, which results in a weak crusty layer on the floor.

This is why these areas are very white in color & hollow sounding.

KNOWLEDGE IS KEY

If you don’t know the correct way to install shotcrete, you cannot hold your subcontractors accountable.

If you don’t supervise your subcontractors, they will take the path of least resistance.

Why too many inches is a bad thing. More, isn’t always better.

Setting a drain sump above the steel can result in cracking of the floor. Read and understand why the codes & engineering demand you don’t.

There are moments in construction when the smallest decisions carry the largest consequences. In swimming pool construction, one of those pivots happens quietly, almost invisibly, at the bottom of the deep end when the drain sump is set in place.

Even thick shells will crack.

Here’s proof… a few cores from destructive testing. We cored the crack to find pipes at the back of the wall & under the floor.

Pipes should be ran OUTSIDE of the thickness of the pool shell.

Displacing concrete with PVC creates a weak plane in the shell. It will promote cracking, much like a control joint that is scored into flatwork.

A 3” pipe in a 6” thick wall is 50% of the wall! A bundle of pipes is even worse, as there will be voids & honeycombs around the pipes.

I realize that no one likes to dig. It’s human nature to avoid effort.

The solution is simple.
Over excavate for the decks & dig your plumbing trenches during excavation with a mini-excavator.

Under floor plumbing should be placed in trenches, under the thickness of the floor or in the gravel. I prefer outside of the gravel to prevent angular rock from potentially cracking a pipe.

This doesn’t take a lot of effort. A 3-inch pipe only needs a 4-inch trench under the shell.

STOP being lazy and creating pools destined to crack along the length of the pipes.

Double curtains of steel, engineered to contain pipes & conduits between the layers of steel are an exception. Free standing or spa walls are an example.

Design your projects to minimize the pipes & conduits in thin walls & floors. Pipes should run perpendicular through the wall when ever possible.

In spas, run your filter & water loops in the thick benches.
