KPI Softball When athletes are made the center of the developmental process, their dreams can become reality.

Spin for the sake of spin is a WASTE.

It’s not about chasing the biggest spin number.

It’s about how your pitches work TOGETHER.

The goal? Create separation between pitches that forces hitters to make different decisions.

3–5 inches = Good
5–8 inches = Advanced
8–10+ inches = Elite

Check out Phoebe’s Drop/Rise combo 👀🔥

Two pitches. Similar intent. Completely different movement profiles.

That’s not just spin.

That’s a PITCHING ARSENAL.

Data Led. Player Driven.

Muscle confusion?
Random workouts?
Something you found on TikTok?
Copying the workout your favorite college program posted?

That’s not a training system.

Every workout should have structure, purpose, and a clear goal for the individual athlete.

At KPI, our goal is simple:

Improve movement efficiency. Build athleticism.

But we don’t guess whether it’s working.

We regularly test our athletes using Hawkin Dynamics Force Plates to measure how they produce force, identify what needs to improve, and make sure their training is actually creating change.

Assess. Build. Retest.

Stop collecting workouts.

Start following a SYSTEM.

How do you KNOW you’re getting better?

Batting Average?
ERA?
Wins?
Losses?
Trophies?
Rankings?

That data is USELESS for development.

Why?

Because outcomes don’t tell you what actually changed.

Did you get stronger?
Did you get faster?
Did your bat speed increase?
Did your exit velocity improve?
Did your pitching velocity improve?
Are you making better swing decisions?

If you want to know whether your training is working, stop relying on outcomes to measure development.

Measure the athlete. Measure the skill. Measure the change.

What Gets Measured, Gets Better!

Velocity Development should be a HUGE part of your training.

Should it be the only focus? No.

Spin matters.
Command matters.
Movement matters.

But if you exclusively focus on spin and command while ignoring velocity, you’re eventually going to hit a ceiling.

At some point, the game gets faster.

And if you can’t throw hard enough to compete at the next level, it won’t matter how well you spin it.

Develop the complete pitcher.

Velocity + Movement + Command.

Been told you need to “stay connected”?

Have a “strong top hand”?

Okay… but what does the top hand actually do?

The top hand helps control the barrel as it accelerates into the zone.

The problem?

A lot of softball players PUSH their hands toward the ball, putting the shoulder in a weak position to actually deliver and control the barrel.

K**B TO BALL!!! 😵‍💫

Instead, try this top-hand drill:

Start off a tee with the barrel resting on the top/side of your shoulder.

Keep it there as long as you can.

Use your hips and shoulders to deliver the barrel instead of pushing your hands forward.

Remember—the end of the bat can create 15–25+ lbs of force that you have to control as the barrel accelerates.

Your hands don’t need to race to the ball.

Turn. Deliver. Control the barrel.

Training FAD or Proven SYSTEM?

Muscle confusion.
Random workouts.
Unstable surfaces.
Kettlebell-only training.
CrossFit.
OrangeTheory.

Fitness trends come and go.

A training system shouldn’t.

What are you assessing?
What are you trying to improve?
How are you progressing it?
How are you measuring whether it worked?

If the answer is just “work hard and sweat”—that’s exercise, not a development system.

Stop chasing FADS. Build a SYSTEM.

10s. 20s. Cardio. Bodyweight exercises.

All common in the average softball player’s workout.

At KPI, we TRAIN.

And training means having goals + data to prove we’re actually making progress.

We also aren’t afraid to MOVE WEIGHT.

Softball players are athletes.

They need to get stronger.
They need to produce force.
They need to handle force.

Check out these supine bridges!

Stop being afraid of getting softball players strong.

Strong athletes have more options.

Are you a down-ball pitcher looking for a new pitch?

Try the 1-Seamer.

Seam orientation could be one of the next big developments in softball pitch design.

How do we know?

Baseball started having these conversations 10+ years ago.

Understanding how the seams interact with the airflow can completely change how a pitch moves—even without completely changing how you naturally spin the ball.

For the right pitcher, changing seam orientation can reduce the downward movement created by their natural spin profile and help create a pitch that plays like a rise ball.

Same athlete.
Similar intent.
Different seam orientation.
Completely different movement profile.

Stop just chasing spin. Start understanding movement.

Most softball players put in the work.

Like… A LOT of work.

Hours in the cage.
Lessons.
Team practices.
Strength training.
Camps.
Travel ball.

And for a lot of families, $1,000s every month.

The investment is massive:

TIME.
ENERGY.
MONEY.

All chasing the same goal: an opportunity to play in college.

But too many athletes put in more and more work without seeing the return on that investment.

At some point, the softball industry needs to stop blaming the athlete.

It’s not a work ethic problem.

It’s a coaching problem.

Actually…

It’s shi*** coaching. Here’s what worked for me. It’s what we have always done. It worked for baseball players I coached. On and on and on…

More work isn’t always the answer.

Better coaching is

Do you have the strength to maintain your upper-body spacing?

We call it the Goldilocks Rule.

Too much space? Problem.

Not enough space? Problem.

You need just the right amount.

But “right” isn’t the same for every hitter.

Your anatomy, physiology, strength, and movement capabilities help determine how much space YOU need to create and maintain.

Stop forcing every hitter into the same position.

Build the space. Build the strength to own it.

Individualized development. Technology fueled.
