🎶 STUDENTS IN ACTION | ALLISON WALKER

This summer, Traditional Music Studies major Allison Walker had the opportunity to grow her songwriting skills at the Appalachian Writers' Workshop at the Hindman Settlement School.

The retreat brought together accomplished songwriters for workshops, song circles, and conversations about the craft. Allison learned from a terrific group of artists, including Kentucky Music Hall of Fame member Dale Ann Bradley, pictured here with her.

There’s another great KCTM connection, too! Sarah Kate Morgan, a KCTM graduate and Hindman’s Director of Traditional Arts Education, helped organize the retreat.

We love seeing our students seek out experiences like this—learning from working artists, developing their own creative voices, and becoming part of the region’s musical community. 🎶👏

🎻 Summer Spotlight: Students on Stage

This week, we’re celebrating Peyton Byrns, a Traditional Music Studies student who has spent his summer performing, teaching, and growing as a musician!

Peyton has stayed busy on steel guitar, performing with Naomi & Blair Carman, David Peterson, Southern Retreat, and Skylar & Erin. He also joined performed at the Stidham Old Time Music Gathering.

Beyond the stage, Peyton has been giving back as an instructor with the Pick and Bow at Martin County High School - Inez, Kentucky program, helping young musicians develop their own skills and connection to traditional music!

From steel guitar gigs to bluegrass stages to teaching the next generation, Peyton’s summer is a great example of learning through experience—and putting that experience to work!

👏 We’re proud of you, Peyton! Keep pickin’!
