Congratulations to Julian Pinon for being selected as a National Educational Opportunity Centers Association Scholarship Competition winner. As a TRIO Academic Coordinator with the Commonwealth Educational Opportunity Center, I was able to nominate him for the $1,000 High School Equivalency Diploma to Postsecondary Enrollment Scholarship. From the very moment I met Julian I was impressed by his determination and enthusiasm.
When Julian realized, he was going to have to obtain a GED diploma, he was gravely concerned because of the language barriers but still he remained unwavering about his commitment to education. Both instructors were highly complementary of his charismatic personality and eagerness to learn. They knew he was a bright student with a lot of potential, so they encouraged him to meet with the CEOC counselor to work on his education goals after he obtained his GED. What is most impressive about Julian is that he completed the GED within 6 months.
I was introduced to Julian and his family at the Montgomery Adult Learning Center GED graduation ceremony. After we started talking about desire to be a teacher, I was able to explain to him that he could go to college. He had concerns about student loans and acquiring debt since he works full time to support his family. After we completed the financial aid and admissions application, I was able to explain to him how he could go to college for free with student aid and scholarships. Once he understood that his dream could be a reality, he was unstoppable.
My next role in the college process was to connect Julian with the Student Support Services TRIO program at the college. Together we worked through issues that came up along the way during the enrollment process. They helped him enroll in classes and navigate the KCTCS student homepage. They also loaned him a laptop for his classes so that he could be prepared for his first semester in college. Navigating college is difficult for first generation students. The services they provided were invaluable to helping him successfully start classes.
Julian is special individual who is going to make a difference in this world. He is determined to become a teacher to help students and be an inspiration to others to work hard for things that matter. He never imagined when he moved to America that this was a possibility for him. All our programs partnered in his success, and we are positive he is going places.
