📊 Making Math Meaningful! 📊

Mr. Hood loved getting the opportunity to teach an Illustrative Mathematics (IM) lesson with Mrs. Middleton’s class today! 💜🩵

Our mathematicians were busy creating bar graphs to display data and then explaining why the scale they chose made sense for their graph.

The best part? We made the lesson personal by using data from our very own classroom! When students can see themselves and their experiences in the mathematics, the learning becomes even more meaningful. 🧠📈

We love seeing students not only do the math, but also explain their mathematical thinking and justify their choices! 🦚✨

✨ Every child has a dot waiting to be discovered! ✨

Today, Mrs. Savannah and Mrs. Chelsea were exploring The Dot with their second graders as part of their EL Education learning! 📚🎨

Through Vashti’s story, students are learning that sometimes it takes a little encouragement, courage, and a willingness to try something new to discover what we’re capable of.

We loved seeing our students think deeply, share their ideas, and make connections to their own experiences as learners. 💜🩵

What a wonderful reminder that a simple dot can be the beginning of something extraordinary! 🦚✨

✨ Building a Strong Math Community! ✨

Mrs. Waugh just wrapped up an amazing math lesson from Illustrative Mathematics (IM), and one of our favorite moments came during her review of the Math Community Norms with her students. 💜🩵

She didn’t just review the norms—she invited her students to think critically about their learning community by asking:

“Is there anything we need to add to help us be more successful in math?”

What a powerful way to give students ownership of their learning environment! When students have a voice in creating the norms, they become active participants in building a classroom where everyone feels safe to share ideas, make mistakes, ask questions, and grow as mathematicians. 🧠✨

We love seeing our teachers create classrooms where every student is a mathematician and every voice matters! 🦚💜🩵

Such a special learning experience for our fifth graders! 💙📚

Thanks to KEDC grant funding, our students had the opportunity to join students and teachers from across Kentucky for a Zoom visit with Kim Michele Richardson, author of My Kentucky Moonlight School! 🌙🏫

Students enjoyed an author read-aloud and a Q&A session where they learned more about Richardson, her writing, and the real history behind Kentucky’s Moonlight Schools.

This experience connected perfectly with our EL Education Module 1 study of human rights and the UDHR, especially Article 26: the right to education. It was even more meaningful for our students because this history is connected to Morehead and Rowan County, where we have our own Moonlight School history right here at home. 💙

We love when learning goes beyond the pages of a book and helps our students see the connections between what we study, Kentucky history, and their own community. A huge thank you to KEDC for making opportunities like this possible for our students! 🌙📖✨
