President’s Message

I am honored and excited to begin my two-year term as your president. It is a privilege to serve alongside such an extraordinary group of women educators who dedicate their lives to inspiring, mentoring, and transforming others. Delta Kappa Gamma continues to make a meaningful difference for women educators around the world, and I encourage you to explore the work of both NC DKG and DKG International. Together, we are part of something much greater than ourselves.

Our State President, Janie Webb, has chosen G.R.I.T. as the theme for her presidency: Grace, Responsibility, Integrity, and Tenacity. These four qualities are the foundation of strong leadership and faithful service. They are characteristics that define exceptional educators—women who lead with compassion, remain true to their values, accept responsibility with humility, and persevere when the path is difficult.

Maintaining GRIT isn’t always easy. Many of us feel that education and experienced educators are not valued as they should be. Whether it is stagnant salaries, increasing demands, or policies that make our work more challenging, there are moments when we wonder if our efforts truly matter. At times, these frustrations are merely irritating; at other times, they have lasting effects on our schools and our students.

Yet, educators have always possessed a remarkable ability to transform challenges into opportunities. We continue to show up for, love, encourage, teach, and invest in the next generation.

The acronym GRIT is why, as a science teacher, my mind immediately goes to the oyster. An oyster’s soft body can be wounded by something as small as a grain of sand. Rather than allowing that irritant to destroy it, the oyster responds by covering it with layer upon layer of nacre—a crystalline substance that, over time, forms one of nature’s most treasured creations: a pearl.

✨ GRIT ➔ Transformation ➔ PEARL ✨

Isn’t that what women educators do every day? We encounter disappointments, setbacks, criticism, and challenges, but through God’s grace we respond with responsibility, integrity, and tenacity to transform life’s irritants into wisdom, compassion, resilience, and hope. Every challenge becomes another layer of character and purpose so that we can become pearls of purpose whose lives reflect beauty through perseverance in the face of any challenge.

A Pearl with Purpose,

Jill McKeon
