Sandra Cisneros, a celebrated American writer best known for her groundbreaking contributions to Chicano literature, was born in Chicago in 1954 to a family of seven children. Moving in-between Chicago and Mexico City throughout her childhood oftentimes left her feeling caught between cultures, and led to an exploration of her identity. While working as a teacher and a counselor Cisneros rose to international prominence with her first novel, The House on Mango Street. Cisneros’ coming-of-age novel has become a mainstay of American school curricula, praised for its accessibility and poignant exploration of social class and the search for a sense of place. In 2016, President Barack Obama presented Sandra Cisneros with the National Medal of Arts.

You're ready to apply. You finished your admissions essay in late August. Your common app's complete. Then you hear your friend talking about early action vs. early decision. Huh? What's the difference?

For both early action and early decision you apply early to a college you want to get into, typically a couple months before the regular due date. The advantage of applying early is that you get to find out earlier if you got into that school, or not. And there may be a slight advantage to applying to some schools early, but not necessarily.

The difference between early action and early decision is that early decision is binding. If you apply early decision to a university and get accepted, you are expected to attend that university. Early action on the other hand is not binding. You can apply early action to multiple schools, find out which ones you got into, and commit to whichever one you choose by the normal reply date.

So...which should you choose? Only apply early decision if you're 100% certain you want to attend that university. If you have your heart set on it. Go for it! If you're not sure, but want to know your options early, try early action instead.
