MYTH: New World screwworm is a disease vector.

FACT: New World screwworm is NOT a disease vector. A disease vector is an organism that transmits an infectious pathogen (such as a virus, bacterium, or parasite) from one host to another. New World screwworm is NOT infectious and cannot be transmitted from animal to animal, from animal to human, or vice versa.

It was an AMAZING day at the Mora County Horse Camp 2026! Thank you to our Horse Project leader, presenters, generous sponsors, parents, kiddos, and the American Legion Post 0114🙏🏼
It was a great camp and it wouldn’t be possible without you all. This is the beautiful side of Mora County that makes me grateful to be a member of this community. 😊🍀

Could you identify New World Screwworm? Most people can't—and that's why we're here to help! 🪰
With a recent confirmed case in Lea County, NM, now is a good time to review the signs of New World Screwworm and inspect animals regularly. If you encounter a suspicious wound or larvae, contact your veterinarian or your local Mora County Extension Office ([email protected]) for assistance with identification and sample submission.
