Everyone say hi to Kathryn Gubrud!!

Kathryn is a Senior Vocal Music Education major from Willmar, MN helping teach 7/8 Choir at Horizon Middle School with Katie Damico!

Here are some things she had to say about the experience:

What have you learned about yourself as a teacher? As a musician? As a piano player?
I have learned a lot about myself through student teaching. I have learned to have patience within the learning process as it takes time. I have really enjoyed playing the pieces we are doing and feel as though I am growing as piano player by trying to learn accompaniments. I also have learned how important it is to demonstrate singing passages with middle school students to help improve their confidence.

How do you feel you have connected to the students?
I feel that I have connected well with the students but I am still working on building relationships with many as there are 285 of them!

What has been your favorite part of student teaching so far?
My favorite part of student teaching is connecting with students on a daily basis and hearing them sing our pieces. They are a wonderful group of young singers.

What is one unexpected challenge you have experienced and how have you overcome it?
An unexpected challenge has been multitasking. It can be difficult to be singing, playing piano, and watching students all at the same time.

What advice do you have for future student teachers?
My advice is to not be afraid to take the opportunities your cooperating teacher gives you because they will only help you grow. Another piece of advice is to remember that student teaching is a learning experience and that you are not supposed to be perfect on the first try!

Everyone meet Kaylee Gross! She is a Senior Vocal Music Education Major from Sioux Falls, SD! She is at Moorhead High School working with Kathie Brekke who teaches 9-12 choir and vocal jazz!

Here is what she has to say about the experience:

What have you learned about yourself as a teacher? As a musician? As a piano player?
My student teaching experience thus far has been very impactful in the way it has both taught me the things I can already do well, as well as the things I have yet to master. I've found that skills I've developed and experiences I've had through courses at Concordia have equipped me well in terms of teaching, musicianship, and piano playing, but there is also so much which can only be taught through the real experience of being immersed in the classroom. Therefore, I am learning to use my strengths to my advantage while improving my areas of growth through continued practice and guidance from my cooperating teacher.

How do you feel you have connected to the students?
Before student teaching began, I was a bit nervous that it would be difficult to connect with high school students while also establishing myself as a teacher since I am closer in age to them. However, I've been pleasantly surprised to find that this balance has come more naturally than I expected. Students see me as an authority within the classroom, but I have still been able to create genuine connections with them through individual conversations or within my teaching.

What is one unexpected challenge you have experienced and how have you overcome it?
After spending my college years surrounded by others who love music as much as I do, it was easy to forget the reality that there are bound to be some students involved in choir at the high school level who aren't particularly thrilled to be there. In efforts to get everyone on board in rehearsals, I've made an intentional effort to connect with these students — they are more willing to put in the work for someone who they feel actually knows them!

What advice do you have for future student teachers?
While you are student teaching, it is so important to simply be yourself and be okay with not having everything figured out! Students can tell when you are trying to be someone you're not or acting like you know it all, and they are far more likely to connect with a person who is genuine and humble. Allow your unique personality to show through your teaching and allow yourself grace to learn what you don't yet know — that is how you grow!

Everyone say hi to Liv Baldzicki!

Liv is a Senior Vocal Music Education major from Prior Lake, MN helping teach 7-12 choir at Barnesville High School with Mrs. Gylland!

Here is what she had to say about the experience so far:

What have you learned about yourself as a teacher? As a musician? As a piano player?
I have learned that I am a very organized person and teacher. I like to have clear plans and expectations. I also have learned that I am a capable musician. I have been able to play parts on the piano for my students and model certain sections of their songs. It has been a validating experience.

How do you feel you have connected with your cooperating teacher?
I have gotten along with my cooperating teacher very well. We are similar in personalities and teaching styles. We like to have fun together and help each other out. She will be a lifelong resource for me!

What has been your favorite part of student teaching so far?
My favorite part of student teaching has been learning the routines of the every day life of a teacher. This experience is so similar to the real job of being a choir director. It has been incredible to see what life can look like in the future.

What advice do you have for future student teachers?
Soak up every moment of student teaching. You’ll get to experience teaching with a safety net, so enjoy it while it’s there.
