Waiting can be really hard for kids with ADHD—but when it’s taught intentionally, it actually helps strengthen executive functioning skills instead of hurting them.
Here’s how 👇
🧠 1. Builds impulse control
ADHD brains are wired for now. Waiting gives kids practice pausing before acting, which strengthens the brain’s “braking system.”
Each supported wait helps move from reacting → thinking first.
⏱️ 2. Improves time awareness
Many kids with ADHD don’t feel time passing. Waiting—especially with visual timers or countdowns—helps them learn:
what “2 minutes” really means
that waiting has a clear start and end
This supports transitions, planning, and follow-through.
💛 3. Supports emotional regulation
Waiting brings up frustration, excitement, or anxiety. With support, kids learn:
“This feeling is uncomfortable”
“I can handle it”
“It won’t last forever”
That’s real emotional regulation practice.
🔄 4. Strengthens flexible thinking
Executive functioning includes adapting when things don’t go as planned. Waiting teaches kids:
not everything happens immediately
plans can change
disappointment is survivable
This flexibility is key for school and social situations.
🤝 5. Builds self-regulation through co-regulation
When adults stay calm and supportive during the wait, kids borrow that calm:
“Waiting is hard. I’m here.”
“Let’s watch the timer together.”
“First we wait, then it’s your turn.”
Over time, kids internalize these strategies.
⚠️ Important note
Waiting only helps when it’s developmentally appropriate and supported.
Long, unstructured waiting or “just be patient” without tools can increase dysregulation and meltdowns.
✅ What makes waiting successful for ADHD kids?
Visual timers
Clear expectations (first/then language)
Short waits that slowly increase
Validation of feelings
Adult modeling and calm presence
✨ Bottom line:
Waiting isn’t about compliance—it’s about building executive functioning skills like impulse control, emotional regulation, and flexibility.

This morning I yelled at my son.
Not because I was angry at him—but because I was scared.
I was overstimulated, worried about him, and carrying too much in my body all at once. And instead of my fear coming out as calm words, it came out loud. It came out sharp. It came out as yelling.
The moment it left my mouth, I knew it wasn’t what he needed.
But I’m learning that **my fear sometimes disguises itself as yelling**.
Later, when we were *both calm*, we talked about it. I apologized. I owned my part. And he shared something important too he said he was worried as well. That moment reminded me that big feelings live on both sides, even when they show up differently.
Moments like this are exactly why I created **Your Emotion Coach**—not because I have it all figured out, but because families need tools *for after the hard moments*. Tools to slow down, name feelings, calm our bodies, and repair together.
This isn’t about being a perfect parent.
It’s about awareness.
Repair.
And teaching our kids that emotions aren’t the problem—how we handle them is.
If you yelled today because you were scared, overwhelmed, or exhausted—you’re not alone. What matters most is what we do next. 💛 This morning I yelled at my son.
