LAKE NORMAN HIGH SCHOOL PTSA RECEIVES $12,000 GRANT
Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation funds Outdoor Classroom Initiative
MOORESVILLE, N.C. – The Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation has awarded a $12,000 grant to the Lake Norman High School PTSA for the school’s outdoor classroom initiative. The funds from the grant will support the school’s SMART Lunch program (Students Maximizing Achievement, Relationships and Time) by providing outdoor spaces for individuals and small groups to gather to pursue academic and extra-curricular activities during the hour-long lunch block. The grant also expands an on-going project between the school’s agriculture and culinary programs, through the permanent installation of innovative garden areas. Students in both programs will use these gardens to grow fresh vegetables and herbs for culinary class use.
“We greatly appreciate the generosity of Lowe’s in helping us to provide resources for meaningful, authentic experiences in our classrooms,” said Keith Gentle, principal of Lake Norman High School.
Mrs. Jackson, Foods teacher at the high school added, “This project provides such a wonderful opportunity to introduce sustainable design in the Foods classes and to demonstrate ‘green living’ features in interior design, architecture, and horticulture classes.”
"The Lowe's hometown grant program is dedicated to helping meet critical needs in our local communities," said Maureen Ausura, chairwoman of the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation. "By supporting Lake Norman High School, we're contributing to a cause that's important to our customers and employees."
The Lake Norman High School PTSA grant was recommended by Lowe’s hometown grant advisory committee comprised of representatives from education, recreation and business in Lake Norman-area communities. The committee reviews applications quarterly and recommends grants to the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation board of directors. The foundation has earmarked $250,000 in annual contributions for Lake Norman-area community improvement and public school projects.
