What a fun night at EmpowerEd! 🎯

Our latest EmpowerEd Evening: Game Night was full of laughs, teamwork, new challenges, and plenty of opportunities to practice important social skills through play.

The group enjoyed free play, turn-taking, learning new games, team challenges, and carnival-style activities like ring toss, target games, and ball-in-the-cup challenges. We also welcomed some new aquatic friends to EmpowerEd and had a very lively brainstorming session to help name our new frog. The name suggestions were definitely creative!

Throughout the evening, kiddos practiced following directions, working together, showing perseverance, asking for help, using calm bodies during group time, and supporting one another during games. These are the kinds of skills that can carry over into the classroom, home, and community.

Of course, Game Night would not be complete without hot dogs, snacks, laughs, and Prize Box rewards. Every kiddo had chances to win, celebrate success, and enjoy the evening with friends.

We loved seeing the connections, confidence, and teamwork happening throughout the night. That is what EmpowerEd social groups are all about!!!

I stumbled across this while I was in the store and immediately thought, the dinosaur kids of the world NEED to know about this! 😂🦖

Lakeshore Learning is hosting a FREE Dino Day on Saturday, September 19 from 11:00 AM–3:00 PM at all Lakeshore locations!

It looks like kiddos will be able to enjoy some seriously fun dinosaur-themed activities, including:

☀️👩‍🍳 Looking Back at Summer at EmpowerEd: Mini Chefs Week! 👨‍🍳🍴

As we look back on all the fun we had during our EmpowerEd Summer Enrichment Program, Mini Chefs Week is definitely one of the weeks that stands out! 💛

Our kiddos spent the week learning through food, cooking, community experiences, games, teamwork, and service.

One of the most meaningful parts of the week was our Every Sandwich Counts project. 🥪💙

Before we got started, we talked together about homelessness, food insecurity, and the fact that not every family or individual always has enough food available to them. Then our kiddos got to work doing something tangible to help.

Together, they made 50 sandwiches for members of our community!

Our chefs prepared turkey and cheese sandwiches and PB&J sandwiches, working together to assemble, organize, and package everything. Before we started, they even made predictions about how many sandwiches they thought we could make, with guesses ranging from 20 all the way to 1,000! 😂

But the project wasn’t only about making food.

Our friends decorated the sandwich bags with encouraging messages such as:

💛 “Have a nice day!”
💛 “You’re awesome!”
💛 “Keep going!”
💛 “You’re so brave!”

It gave us an opportunity to talk about how even something that feels small to us can make a difference for someone else.

Throughout the project, our kiddos practiced counting, sequencing, following directions, communication, teamwork, fine motor skills, and problem solving, but most importantly, they practiced kindness and thinking about the needs of others.

Mini Chefs Week also gave our friends plenty of opportunities to make and explore food themselves! 👩‍🍳

Our kiddos spent time following recipes, measuring and combining ingredients, practicing kitchen safety, making choices, trying different foods, and developing independence with everyday kitchen tasks.

We also took our learning out into the community with a visit to Cathy’s Catering, where our chefs were able to get a behind-the-scenes look at food preparation in a professional setting. They had the chance to observe, ask questions, and connect some of the skills we were practicing at EmpowerEd to a real local food business.

And because summer enrichment should still feel like SUMMER, we made plenty of room for fun too! ☀️

Our friends played food-themed games, competed in Blooket, played Apples to Apples and WAR, shared meals together, took movement and play breaks, and wrapped up our week with some very creative ice cream creations. 🍦😂

Marshmallows, Swedish Fish, sprinkles, chocolate rocks…nothing was off limits once our Mini Chefs got control of the toppings!

What we loved most about this week was how naturally so many different skills came together.

🥣 Measuring became math.
📖 Recipes became reading comprehension and sequencing.
🤏 Preparing food became fine motor practice.
🗣️ Cooking together became communication and social skills.
💪 Completing tasks independently became confidence.
🥪 Making sandwiches for someone else became a lesson in empathy and community.

That is exactly what we want our EmpowerEd Summer Enrichment Program to be.

Our kiddos are learning, but they are also doing.

They’re trying new things.
They’re building friendships.
They’re becoming more independent.
They’re learning about the community around them.
And they’re discovering that they are capable of making a difference in it. 💙

Mini Chefs Week was about so much more than food, and we are incredibly proud of everything our chefs accomplished! 👩‍🍳✨

We have so many more summer memories to look back on, and we can’t wait to continue sharing them!

💛 **Anxiety doesn’t always look like anxiety.**

For children, anxiety can sometimes show up as avoidance, irritability, frequent reassurance-seeking, physical complaints, difficulty separating from caregivers, or even behaviors that may initially look like defiance.

That’s why understanding what may be happening **beneath the behavior** is so important.

This short video from the **Child Mind Institute** offers a helpful look at some of the signs of anxiety families and educators may notice in children.

At **EmpowerEd**, we believe that behavior is communication. When we take the time to understand *why* a child may be struggling, we’re better able to provide the support, structure, and encouragement they need to feel successful. 💙

📚💛 As we get ready to head into a new school year, it’s a great reminder that success isn’t only about grades, reading levels, or how quickly a child masters a new skill.

For many children with learning differences, confidence can make such a difference in their willingness to try, make mistakes, ask for help, and keep going when something feels hard.

At EmpowerEd, we believe in meeting children where they are, celebrating their strengths, and helping them recognize that needing support does **not** mean they aren’t capable. Sometimes the most important thing we can help a child learn is, *“I can do hard things, even if I do them differently.”* 💛

This short video from the Child Mind Institute shares some helpful insight on building confidence in children with learning disorders as we head into a fresh school year.

Here’s to a year of growth, courage, and lots of little wins worth celebrating! 🌟📚

What a wonderful Mini Chef Week experience at Cathy's Catering - Catering in South Jersey on Main Street!❤️👩🏽‍🍳

We are so incredibly grateful to Cathy and her team for welcoming our EmpowerEd kiddos into their space and giving them such a fun, hands-on opportunity to learn more about food, cooking, and what happens behind the scenes in a local kitchen.

Our students were able to explore new foods, see how dishes come together, practice following directions, talk about ingredients, and, of course, enjoy some delicious creations along the way! Experiences like this allow us to take skills we work on every day, including communication, sequencing, independence, and trying something new, and connect them to the real world in such a meaningful way.

One of my favorite parts of EmpowerEd is being able to create opportunities for our students to learn beyond the four walls of our classroom, and having local businesses willing to open their doors to our kiddos makes that possible.

A HUGE thank you to Cathy’s Carryout Cuisine for being so patient, welcoming, generous, and supportive of our group. We truly appreciate you taking the time to make our Mini Chefs feel so special. 🥰

We left with lots of smiles and some very proud young chefs by the end of our visit. I’d say that’s a pretty successful field trip! 👨🏽‍🍳🍝🧁

Thank you, Cathy’s, for helping us make Mini Chef Week one to remember! ❤️

Parenting a teen can sometimes feel like learning an entirely new language. 💛

As our kids grow, they’re developing their independence, figuring out who they are, and navigating friendships, emotions, expectations, and a whole lot of change at once. And sometimes, knowing when to step in, when to listen, and when to simply give them a little room can be hard.

We came across this helpful video from the Child Mind Institute about supporting kids through the teen years and keeping the lines of communication open along the way.

Whether you’re already parenting a teenager or those years are quickly approaching, this is a great little resource to save and watch. 💙
