The start of this year’s application cycle was more momentous than usual, as colleges introduced new essay prompts and adjusted requirements for a post–affirmative action world.

The Supreme Court ruling is creating a double-edged sword for our kids applying to college. On one hand...we want them to write about their background, experiences, etc. but on the other hand...we have to be very careful and not step over the affirmative action barrier!! Tough times for these kids!

It may help to identify minority students, but experts caution against expecting essays to replace affirmative action.
