Whenever a performance becomes about you, your virtuosity, your athleticism, your ability, or in any way deviates from a communication of the music itself, you need to re-evaluate whether or not you are making music in service to the music itself...indeed in service to the vision of the composer. I believe this is particularly true of music composed from the 19th century backwards.
