Say no to govt funded home education!!!

I’m anti-school voucher.
I’m anti-ESA.
I’m anti-taxpayer-funded homeschool.

I’m a second generation homeschooler.
I’m a former single-mom homeschooler.
I’m a working-mom homeschooler.

I’m a taxpayer.

Now that I got that out of the way, I’m here to report that since we passed the ESA in Texas, we have homeschool moms asking for ideas on how to spend their thousands.

They applied for the money without actually knowing what they would spend it on.

That was meant for curriculum, right? You needed help homeschooling, right?

But now you have multiple thousands of dollars, and you need a list of ideas. So you buy things that taxpayers should not be subsidizing: backpacks, fancy pens, music, and programs you didn’t need and never heard of before.

I’ve seen one too many Facebook posts about this. I’m not making this up.

When veteran homeschoolers actively campaigned against this, we saw this coming. We knew that homeschooling could be done on a dime, because we’ve been there. We knew that waste is rampant in government programs of every kind. We knew it would be taken advantage of. We knew that the taxpayers would have to fund ridiculous shopping list items.

We knew.

And we also know that after all this, our homeschool freedom will be chiseled away, slowly, bit by bit, and the expense of someone’s free math book, wipe-off markers, and a cool backpack.

How much time should a school day take? Certainly not 7-8 hours. The younger a child is, the less time they need to spend on actual academic work.

Around 8 years old, we begin most formal schooling at our house. Math practice (addition and subtraction), phonics lesson and reading practice, and handwriting and copy work. This takes about an hour a day. It’s followed up with listening to mom read aloud from a history book or literature classic.

So what does an 8-year-old do all day at public school? Good question! You should go and ask. It’s a lot of busy work (worksheets and book reports?) and social and emotional learning (subjective and opinionated), coupled with test prep and the necessary academic work.

What does a child raised at home do all day? Learn for an hour or two, play with siblings, help with chores, learn to cook, play with pets, ride a bike, build a fort, draw pictures for fun, watch a movie, eat meals with the family, and read the Bible with Dad.

They also learn the non-academic lessons from their family in the safety of the home, like getting along, teamwork, honesty, right and wrong, God’s creation, and a biblical worldview.

Delayed academics does not mean "behind." It's been studied and proven that children who learn the basics later than the government-recommended schedule actually learn faster and "catch up" to their peers very quickly. Meanwhile, childhood is theirs to live!
