Today I had the honor of sitting in on a roundtable discussion with the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Tribal leaders, and veteran advocates right here in Oklahoma.

Our state is home to 39 Tribal Nations and one of the largest populations of Native veterans in the country. Native Americans have served in our military at some of the highest rates of any group, answering the call to serve this nation generation after generation.

Today’s discussion focused on listening. Listening to the needs of Tribal communities, the barriers some veterans still face, and how we can continue building stronger partnerships between the VA and Tribal Nations so veterans can access the care and benefits they earned.

Oklahoma has a proud tradition of service, and it was encouraging to see Tribal leaders and veteran advocates bringing those voices forward today.

Today is Medal of Honor Day ❤️

More than 3,500 service members have received our nation’s highest military award, the Medal of Honor.

Only one woman has ever received it.

That woman was Mary Edwards Walker.

Dr. Mary Walker was a surgeon during the American Civil War who refused to sit on the sidelines when soldiers needed care. When she first tried to join the Union Army, she was turned away because she was a woman. Instead of giving up, she volunteered as a surgeon at a temporary hospital in Washington, D.C. until the Army eventually hired her.

She went on to serve with the Army of the Cumberland and the 52nd Ohio Infantry, becoming the first female surgeon in the U.S. Army.

Dr. Walker treated soldiers on the front lines, often crossing enemy territory to care for wounded civilians. During one of those missions, she was captured by Confederate forces, accused of being a spy, and held as a prisoner of war in Richmond, Virginia until she was released in a prisoner exchange.

For her extraordinary dedication to caring for the wounded in and beyond the battlefield, she was awarded the Medal of Honor after the war.

In 1917, her name was removed from the Medal of Honor Roll along with more than 900 others during a review of recipients. But in 1977, her medal was restored, recognizing the significance of her service and sacrifice.

Her story is a powerful reminder of how far we have come.

And also a reminder that we still have work to do to ensure the service and sacrifices of women in uniform are fully seen, honored, and remembered.

Today, on Medal of Honor Day, we remember the heroes who have worn our nation’s uniform and we honor Dr. Mary Walker. A pioneer. A healer. A prisoner of war. And the only woman to ever receive our nation’s highest military honor.

Last week we had the incredible honor of traveling to Washington, DC as part of the American Legion Oklahoma National Security Council to represent women veterans and meet with our Oklahoma senators and representatives. We were able to share our concerns about veteran legislation and talk about real solutions for the women who served our country. 🇺🇸

And yes… a few Oklahoma women veterans walking the halls of Congress might have raised the average level of grit in the building. Just saying. 😉. So while we might have been a little outnumbered walking into those congressional offices… we definitely weren’t short on determination. 💪

We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to advocate, to be heard, and to continue pushing for real solutions like the SAVES Act that support the veterans who sacrificed for all of us.

Thank you to everyone who stands beside our veterans and believes they deserve the support they earned.

We’re just getting started.

🇺🇸 Happy Presidents’ Day 🇺🇸

Did you know that over 30 United States Presidents served in the military before leading our nation? From militia service in the 1700s to modern-day armed forces, leaders like George Washington, Andrew Jackson, Ulysses S. Grant, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and George W. Bush all wore the uniform first.

As a Navy veteran and Ms Achievement USA, this day reminds me that service before self has always been part of America’s leadership story. Whether in uniform, volunteering in our communities, or advocating for fellow veterans through Got Your Six Service Dogs for Veterans and American Legion Post 184 here in Moore, Oklahoma, leadership begins with serving others.

Today, let’s honor the Presidents who served, the veterans who continue to serve in new ways, and the future leaders rising from our ranks. 🇺🇸

Tell me in the comments…
