Proud to see RMU students representing the Sport Management program and broader university community at the Undergraduate Research Conference this week. Their work reflected thoughtful research, professionalism, and a willingness to tackle meaningful issues connected to sport, health, and society.

Congratulations to:
Gio Colarusso, whose project, “The Lost Artists of Screen Acting: Should Professional Wrestlers be allowed to unionize and join SAG/AFTRA?” explored labor rights, working conditions, and unionization efforts in professional wrestling under the advisement of Dr. Armand Buzzelli.

Abigail Elliott, advised by Dr. Artemisia Apostolopoulou, for her research project “Title IX in the Modern Era of College Athletics: Compliance, Equity, and Emerging Challenges.”

Zachary Sibenac, whose research on Tommy John Surgery Prediction in Major League Baseball (MLB) Pitchers was guided with support from Dr. John Clark.

It is exciting to see our students applying classroom knowledge to real-world questions across sport management, athletics, medicine, labor relations, and equity in sport. Experiences like these highlight the importance of undergraduate research and the mentorship happening throughout the RMU community.

Congratulations to all of the student presenters and faculty mentors involved in this year’s conference. Great work representing RMU Sport Management and the RMU Honors Program.

Pittsburgh is getting ready to welcome the NFL Draft this week, and you can feel the excitement building across the city.

Recently, faculty from the Rockwell School of Business at Robert Morris University, including our Dean, Dr. Daria Crawley, and Assistant Professor of Sport Management, Dr. Armand Buzzelli, attended Draft Talks in support of two incredible causes: St. Anthony School Programs and The Jasmine Nyree Campus.

It was a fantastic evening centered on community, impact, and connection. St. Anthony’s continues to provide inclusive education for students ages 5–21 with diverse learning needs, while the Jasmine Nyree Campus is creating a safe and empowering space for residents in Sheraden and surrounding neighborhoods.

The night featured an outstanding panel with Joey Porter Sr., Joey Porter Jr., and our esteemed alumnus Kevin Colbert, along with a special message from Dan Colbert. The conversation was brought to life by legendary broadcaster Bill Hillgrove and moderated by RMU graduate and Pittsburgh morning news anchor Ryan Recker.

We are especially proud to celebrate Kevin Colbert. His impact with the Pittsburgh Steelers is well known, and he continues to give back to the game as an advisor with the Ohio State University football program. He was also recently recognized as an honorary inductee into Beta Gamma Sigma.

What a night. The stories, the laughter, and the support for two meaningful missions made it one to remember. As the Draft approaches, it’s a great reminder of how strong the Pittsburgh sports community truly is.

Congratulations to Steve Swetoha and the entire organization on capturing the franchise’s first-ever NBA G League Finals championship. Finishing a perfect 5-0 postseason run is a remarkable accomplishment and a reflection of the leadership, culture, and commitment that have helped build the Swarm into one of the top organizations in the league. Steve has long been a tremendous representative of Sport Management, not only as a proud alumnus, but also as Chair of our Sport Management Advisory Board. His continued support, mentorship, and leadership have made a meaningful impact on our students and program. We’re proud to celebrate this milestone and grateful to have leaders like Steve helping shape the future of sport. SportBusiness Leadership

At RMU we pride ourselves on connecting our classroom learning to practical industry skills. One of the ways we’ve been able to be so successful at producing career ready graduates is by bringing in industry experts for meaningful conversations. Today we highlight a few of the excellent speakers who have generously shared their time with our students this spring.

We are proud to recognize Mikayla Lapage on being selected as a recipient of the 2026 Mike Lange Memorial Scholarship, presented by S&T Bank and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation!

As part of the selection process, Mikayla developed a marketing plan focused on strengthening S&T Bank’s connection with the Gen Z audience. She applied classroom concepts to a real-world challenge at a high level.

Mikayla was one of just five students selected for this prestigious award, which honors the legacy of legendary Pittsburgh Penguins broadcaster Mike Lange and supports the next generation of leaders in sport, business, and communications.

We’re incredibly proud of Mikayla and all she continues to accomplish. The future is bright! ✨

Sport Management Week at RMU was a great reminder of how strong the connection is between our classroom and the sport industry.

Over the course of the week our students had the opportunity to hear from professionals across several areas of the sports world and learn about the many pathways into the industry.

We began the week discussing opportunities connected to the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh. Melissa Cade, VP of Community Programs at P3R, joined us to talk about how our students can get involved in one of the biggest events our city has ever hosted.

Later in the week we hosted a Minor League Sports career panel featuring Tyler Smith (Ticket Manager, Wheeling Nailers), Andrew Gardner (GM and Co-Founder, Pittsburgh Thunderbirds), Grant Glorioso (Co-Owner, Bridge City FC), and John DePellegrini (Business Operations Assistant, Washington Wild Things). After a great discussion led by Professor Emeritus Dr. David Synowka, students were able to network and learn about internships and career paths in minor league sports.

We also held our Sport Management Night at the RMU vs Detroit Mercy basketball game, where students connected with alumni and industry professionals while supporting RMU Athletics.

To close out the week, several local WPIAL and PIAA officials spoke with our students about the growing need for sports officials in Western Pennsylvania and the opportunities that exist for those interested in getting involved.

A big thank you to all of the professionals, alumni, and partners who took time to invest in our students. Experiences like these are what make sport management education meaningful.

Last night was what Sport Management is all about.

More than 60 alumni, students, and friends came together for a pre-game social as part of Sport Management Week. Then RMU men’s basketball took care of business with a win over Detroit Mercy.

As we celebrate 50 years, we are reminded that our greatest strength has always been our people. Thank you to everyone who came back, showed up, and continues to invest in this program.
