Let’s talk strategy.

If you’re a junior, a PSAT score of 1120+ means you’re likely on track for a 1200+ SAT — a score that puts you in range for many state and national universities.

Why aim for 1200+?

Above average = more options

Makes your SAT “count” at many schools

A strong score for scholarship consideration

But — if your sights are set on top-tier schools, you’ll want to be aiming for a 1480+ SAT.

Use your PSAT to predict, not define:

1120 PSAT → 1200–1300 SAT range

1300 PSAT → 1400+ SAT likely

1450+ PSAT → You’re approaching National Merit and top school competitiveness

National Merit cutoffs vary by state, but a 1500+ PSAT is typically needed to qualify.

Bottom line:
Use your PSAT score to guide your SAT prep plan.
Set your sights based on your goals, not just your current score.

COMMON APP: It’s Not a Form—It’s a Strategy

You’ve heard of the Common App. You might even know it’s “just one application for many colleges.”
But here’s what most families don’t realize:

What Is It, Really?

The Common App is the platform used to apply to 1,000+ colleges—but not all schools are on it (e.g., MIT, UCs, Georgetown).

It includes:

🏫 Your college list

📝 Up to 10 activities, each ranked and described

✍️ One personal essay (uploaded—usually pre-written)

🗂️ School-specific supplements

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family, education, coursework, and background info

📩 Recommenders, FERPA waiver, and fee waivers

It’s not a quick form—it’s a framing tool for your entire application story.

How Long Does It Take?

Even if essays and supplements are drafted ahead, expect to spend 6–10 focused hours entering everything into the Common App platform—strategically and carefully.

Why?

Each section requires thought, review, and precision

The Activities List can make or break a first impression

FERPA permissions and recommenders require confirmation

Errors or mismatched tone can subtly weaken your app

PARENTS: Here’s How to Help (Without Taking Over)

Do:

Sit down with your student to fill out the Family section

Help manage deadlines, recommenders, and fee waiver logistics

Review the final app for clarity, tone, and alignment

Don’t:

Rush the process or try to do it all in one sitting

Reword your student’s voice—it always shows

Explore the layout—don’t rush filling anything in yet

Business is one of the most popular - and most competitive - majors right now. So when a student tells us they’re applying to Wharton, Ross, Stern, or McCombs, we don’t just nod. We dig deeper.

Why business? Why finance? Why this path specifically?

Because when everyone’s saying the same thing, only the applicants who stand out for the right reasons actually break through. Here’s what serious business applicants NEED to know:

📌 Take the hardest math classes available — AP Calc BC is the expectation at selective programs. AP Stats or AP Econ? Great, but they don’t replace calculus.

📌 Get A’s in those math classes. No exceptions. These are the grades admissions officers look at first for business.

📌 Don’t drop core subjects for business electives. Stay strong in English, history, science, and foreign language all the way through senior year.

📌 If you’re submitting test scores, your math section better be your highest.

📌 Do more than join the Investment Club. Start something. Intern. Create. Build a story around your business interest that no one else can tell.

📌 Write essays that show depth — not just ambition. Tell us why business, not just which school.

📌 Don’t try to game the system by listing another major to increase your chances. Admissions officers can tell when it’s a workaround.

📌 And finally, build a college list that’s actually balanced. Wharton + Stern + Ross + McCombs is NOT a balanced list - it’s a lottery ticket.

Being «interested in business» is no longer enough. The students who rise to the top are the ones who ask better questions, take harder classes, and tell bolder stories.
