They Didn’t Just Use a 3D Printer. They Built One. 🖨️⚙️

Some parts came in a box.
Some parts had to be 3D printed.
And then the real work began.

Piece by piece, students assembled the frame, installed the electronics, connected the motors, and turned a pile of components into a working 3D printer.

That moment when it finally moves?
When the first print begins?

That excitement is hard to teach from a textbook. 🚀

Because there’s a big difference between knowing how technology works…and building the technology yourself.

At Brain Bytes Academy, we want kids to be comfortable on the other side of technology — not just using it, but understanding it, building it, and eventually inventing what comes next.

☀️ Summer is almost over. And September has a habit of arriving whether we planned for it or not.

At Brain Bytes Academy, kids don’t just use technology. They build it.

🤖 Robots. ⚙️ Hardware. 💻 Code. 🖨️ 3D designs.

The parts may cost a few dollars.
The valuable bit is what happens in their heads: “I can figure this out.”

Our Fall Classes start September 1 — and now is the time to plan your child’s fall, not after the calendar fills up.

🚀 4-class options available.
👥 Group classes or individual class options available.

Time waits for no one. Curiosity shouldn’t either.

🐸 It looks like a frog. But watch what’s happening inside the child’s brain.

One of our kindergarten students built a LEGO frog this week.

Then came the harder part:

Make it move.

Suddenly, this wasn’t really a LEGO activity anymore.

👀 Eyes: Which piece goes where? Why doesn’t mine look like the model?
🤏 Fingers: Grip. Push. Connect. Rotate. Reposition.
🧠 Spatial reasoning: If the motor turns this way, what happens over there?
💻 Coding: Tell the frog what to do—in the correct sequence.
🔊 Listening: Hear the instructions, hold them in mind, then act on them.
🔁 Debugging: It didn’t hop. Why? Change something. Try again.
🎯 Attention: Stay with the problem long enough to make the frog come alive.

And then…

HOP. 🐸

This is the rather wonderful trick of robotics education:

The child thinks they built a frog.

Their brain thinks they just completed an unusually entertaining workout.

Research with children as young as 5–6 has found educational robotics can support computational thinking and executive functions—including working memory, inhibition and cognitive flexibility. Research also points to benefits in spatial reasoning, sequencing, algorithmic thinking and debugging. (ScienceDirect)

And this is why I think we sometimes ask the wrong question about young children and technology.

We ask:

“Is kindergarten too young for robotics?”

Perhaps the better question is:

“Why would we wait?”

Because at five years old, “coding” doesn’t have to mean sitting silently in front of a screen typing mysterious symbols.

It can mean touching, building, looking, predicting, moving, laughing, failing, rebuilding—and yelling “IT WORKS!” when a plastic frog finally hops across the table.

The frog is almost beside the point.

The thinking required to make it hop is the education. 🐸🧠

At Brain Bytes Academy, that’s what we want technology to be: not something children simply consume, but something they learn to control, question, build and create with.

🤖🌿 THE NEW FLL SEASON IS HERE!

Our Brain Bytes Academy FIRST LEGO League Explore team is officially back — and the excitement is REAL! 🚀

Our young engineers are ready to dive into this season’s BioGlow theme! 🌱✨

Over the coming weeks, they’ll research real-world problems, brainstorm creative solutions, build and program LEGO® robots, and prepare to share their work at competition.

And perhaps the best part? They’re doing it as a team — learning to collaborate, experiment, problem-solve, and discover that engineering is a lot more fun when you get to build something together. 🧠⚙️

🧱 “Wait… let me show you how it works.”

One of our favorite moments at Brain Bytes Academy is when a student finishes a LEGO Engineering build—and immediately wants to give us the full demo. 😄

Not because we asked him to.

Because he built it, he understands it, and he’s proud of it.

That little demonstration is actually a big deal.

He’s practicing engineering, problem-solving, communication, and the confidence to explain why something works—not simply following instructions to get the “right” answer.

At Brain Bytes Academy, the goal isn’t just to build LEGO models.

It’s to help kids go from:

“Tell me what to do.” → “Look what I figured out.” 🚀

And that pride on their face when it finally works?

That might be the best part.

🚀 FROM CAMPERS TO INNOVATORS!

One of our favorite moments of STEM Camp? Watching our students step up and deliver their own Shark Tank-style product pitches! 🦈💡

They identified a problem, used AI to research ideas, developed their own product concepts, and then had to do something just as important: stand up and sell their idea.

This is what STEM education can look like.
