We are excited to share this exhibit created by one of our Year 1 Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) participants. The In Pursuit of an Education exhibit highlights the history of African American schools in Norfolk County (present-day Chesapeake) from 1870 through the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision in 1954.

The exhibit is on display at Portlock at South Norfolk through March 31 and is available to visit by appointment (757-382-6411).

An open house will be held on Saturday, March 28 at 1:00 PM.

AT Johnson Museum keeps alive the story of the former AT Johnson High School, a high school built for Black students in Westmoreland County in 1937 during segregation.

We were so glad to partner with the museum to help local educators design and lead a professional development session for both retired and younger teachers in the community. It was powerful to see teachers come together across generations to share, learn, and connect through this important history.

We were thrilled to see Theresa Cramer (Fredericksburg Area Museum) was bringing her PD work to life! Her powerful program on rural school desegregation highlights local histories in the Fredericksburg area that are often overlooked - and invited meaningful conversations among K-12 teachers.

This series of five workshops on school desegregation in rural communities will run from today through the end of July 2025 at locations across Virginia. Please share this flyer with K-12 educators who might be interested so they can register to attend. Each workshop will offer 2–5 professional development hours, and the content aligns with Virginia’s Standards of Learning (SOLs).
