1. Not tuning before you practice.

I’m definitely guilty of this one. You pick up the guitar, and it’s mostly in tune, so you don’t bother whipping out the tuning app. Even if you’re just slightly out of tune, you’re not going to sound as good, and you’re likely going to put down the instrument sooner! Sounding good is fun, so make it easier for yourself.

2. Never playing along with the song.

The pressure of trying to keep up with the
song/metronome is often what unlocks the riff! Playing without it allows students to play the easy parts fast and slow down dramatically for the harder parts. The most productive approach for my students is to slow the song down until it’s irritatingly slow (using YouTube’s playback speed function), and play to that. Once they can play it comfortably at that, we speed up! They get where they want to go much much faster this way.

3. Only using one finger.

Everyone loves using their index finger, but the index finger can only move so fast! Focus on building comfort in your other fingers and your playing will be much cleaner. To improve this, I love giving my students the ‘Spider’ excercise as a warm up. We play through frets 1-4 on each string, using the index finger for fret 1, the middle finger for 2, ring for 3 and pinky for 4! Bonus points if you set up a rippin tone on the amp for your student and hop on the drums while they play!

Also - if you’re just getting started playing, here are 3 great ones to check out!

1. Seven Nation Army (The White Stripes)
Students usually pick this one up pretty quickly. It’s fun, easy, and everyone knows it. I never have to explain the rhythm, my students already know it. That makes it really easy for us to start playing together right away. Few things help you progress like playing with another musician, and this song is perfect for that.
2. Brain Stew (Green Day)
Very similar to Seven Nation Army. Easy to learn, all on one string, and a lot of fun. Students often pick this one up fast and are jamming in no time. (Bonus points if you crank the drive on the student’s amp.)
3. Zombie (The Cranberries)
Great introduction to playing chords. It’s four chords all the way through (basically Em–Cmaj7–G–D), and they can all be simplified as needed. It’s great for chord-changing practice and just a great song overall. Can’t go wrong there 🫡
