Vermont Drinking Water Week

Vermont Drinking Water Week National Drinking Water Week occurs the first full week of May and Vermont has been celebrating it for over 30 years.

The Vermont Drinking Water Week Committee busily plans for 10 months leading up to the Drinking Water Week Fair, Friday May 9th this year. The Fair will be held again at VINS in Quechee, VT and we expect close to 200 4-6th graders, plus their teachers, aids, parents and volunteers. At the Fair, students are exposed to myriad drinking water activities designed to stimulate thought and conversation

about drinking water, its role in our lives and the impact our activities have on it. Additionally, because we will be at VINS, we include many of the wonderful educational activities they have to offer. Students arrive between 9:30Am and 10AM, are greeted by Sir Hydro Logic, our water drop mascot, and escorted by their respective volunteer to their first drinking water-related activity. Students spend approximately 20-25 minutes at each activity and get to visit as many as seven activities, depending on their arrival and departure time, during the day. Groups have between 15 and 20 students, resulting in numerous groups rotating throughout the VINS site. Groups come together at 11:00AM for VINS’ raptor show and then on to awards and lunch. Activities continue throughout the afternoon until the schools’ departure between 1 and 2PM. As groups depart, a reusable shopping bag, BPA-free water bottle, and other education material is provided to each student, teacher, aide, parent and volunteer. As a buildup to Drinking Water Week all elementary schools are invited to participate in the annual poster and photo contest. As in previous years, students in grades 4-6 are asked to submit artwork based on the year’s theme: Treasure ye Tap Water, Matey. Artwork is judged by representatives from a variety of stakeholders associated with Vermont’s drinking water. First place winners from each grade see their poster printed and distributed statewide and a $100 check. Honorable Mention winners receive an individual pass to Vermont State Parks.
