After reading "The Flight of Icarus", retold by by Sally Benson, students in Ms. Backus's class took their learning to the next level by creating various projects ranging from poetry, writing a blog post, creating their own myth and mythological creature, to research grief. They demonstrated their understanding of the myth’s characters, themes, symbolism, and lessons, and real-world application while using their own creativity to bring their ideas to life. We are so proud of the effort, imagination, and critical thinking our students put into these projects!

📈💰 Ms. Small’s Investing Academy is preparing students to tackle their futures!

This semester, our Business students are competing in the Stock Market Game, managing a $100,000 simulated portfolio while researching investments and making real-world financial decisions.

🏆 Congratulations to 8th graders Carter & Terrance! Their team is currently #128 out of 1,470 teams in our region—placing them in the top 9%!

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Parents, please ask your student to show you their Stock Market Game account! Ask what they are learning about stocks, bonds, and mutual funds and have them explain their investment decisions. 📈💰

✍️ Students can extend their learning with the 🇺🇸 Capitol Hill Writing Challenge. Essays must be 400–900 words and answer this question:

“During the Stock Market Game, which stock, bond or mutual fund investment taught you the biggest lesson? How can you use that lesson to build your own long-term, diversified investment portfolio and to educate others about long-term investing?”

Essays are due December 1 and must be turned into Ms. Small.

The top 10 teams can earn the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., meet with Members of Congress, and participate in special educational experiences.

Calling all young writers! Do you have a spooky story waiting to be told? The Georgia Writers Museum is hosting its 9th Annual Spooky Story Contest! 📅

Submissions DUE: October 12th

RULES:

500 word limit for all submissions.

Must be an original story, not the retelling of a story. Plagiarized entries will be disqualified.

Only one entry per person will be accepted in this Contest.

Only single author stories qualify (no co-authored stories).
