With the start of classes today for all students and the general hum of the Library returning back to normal levels, we wanted to post a quick shout-out to our Library Staff members here for helping with the move-in of students this past Saturday morning at Bankston Hall. Being a cheerful presence for the new students with their parents as they arrived, our Library staff helped them get setup with their dorm room assignments and UAM cards. We hope these new students find their way over to the Library and visit with our excellent staff again very soon!

Happy Thursday to everyone! With the World Cup tournament having ended this past weekend after a month of action, we wanted to share these soccer articles that we recently came across from 1939. These two articles came from the university's student newspaper The Weevil Outlet and reported about the new intramural boys and girls soccer leagues that were being started in the Monticello area and involved UAM students.

Mrs. Dorothy Barbe who is mentioned in both articles was a Physical Education Instructor for the university for two years during this time and was in charge of the expansion of the university's intramural activities from being seasonal to occurring year-round in a variety of team sports. She also was the coach for the intramural soccer teams that played in the local leagues around Monticello.

It is not known how long these local soccer leagues lasted overall, with WW2 having recently began at the time of those articles. However, the development of these city leagues at a time when soccer in the US was on a major decline nationally from its earlier 1920's height of popularity is an interesting look into the overall trends of the period, and how quickly or how slowly things were picked up here in SE Arkansas vs the rest of the country.

The images below show the newspaper articles about the local soccer activities and of Mrs. Barbe with some student intramural team representatives from the six men's teams and four ladies teams the university had at the time for all of the sports that was played. The REWIND - #31

Happy Wednesday and welcome back to this week’s The REWIND, highlighting interesting people or events from UAM’s History. This week’s posting will be highlighting an athletic achievement for two former UAM students, and how their sportsmanship while attending UAM eventually garnered great recognition later.

We look back to this week in 2013, and the announcement of an induction for two former UAM athletes for sporting achievement, and the reasons behind why they earned their recognition into a specific group of honors. Greg Culp and Milton Williams were both track and field athletes for UAM in the early 1980s, with Culp competing with the high jump and hurdles towards decathlon events, while Williams was competing with shot put and the discus events. Both went on to have very outstanding individual seasons on the Track and Field team and set school records in their performances on the field. Culp and Williams helped elevate the program to having athletic conference-recognized All-American honors and individual winners at track championship events for the team. So, in 2013, both were inducted into the Arkansas Track and Field Hall of Fame, becoming the 3rd and 4th UAM individuals to join overall. They were inducted alongside five other former student athletes in a ceremony in Little Rock that year. Their induction information and sports achievements can still be seen at the Arkansas Sports Hall of fame, along with the previous UAM inductees, former track coach Harry Denson and track athlete Damon Martin.

The REWIND - #30

Happy Thursday and welcome back to this week’s The REWIND, highlighting interesting people or events from UAM’s History. This week’s posting will be looking at the end of a long period of excellence in service for an individual who worked at UAM and was a dedicated educator for students.

We go back to this week in 1994, and to give a honorable mention a significant former faculty member of UAM who at that time was retiring from teaching at the university. Mr. Louis Dunlap, a professor of Mathematics with UAM, was honored alongside 3 other professors in a retirement ceremony by Chancellor Taylor for their many years of teaching and overall impact on UAM. Having first started teaching at UAM in 1973, Louis Dunlap helped anchor the Mathematics Department through the 70’s and 80’s as it continued to evolve and develop its curriculum and staff to reflect the needs of UAM students going into the digital age.

The REWIND - #29

Happy Memorial Friday and welcome back to this week’s The REWIND, highlighting interesting people or events from UAM’s History. This week’s post reflects on a significant event for one of our buildings on campus, and the individuals who were there at that time for this event when it occurred.

This week’s posting is looking back on an event that happened this week in 1974, and the groundbreaking ceremony that took place on campus for the very uniquely designed Administration Building, that sits right off the main drive into campus. The construction of this building was a piece of a larger project on campus to build four new buildings overall, with the goal for all these buildings to be in use by the fall semester of 1975. For the groundbreaking that took place, there were several people there that participated in the event, such as UAM Chancellor Claude Babin, two UA board members in Hugh Chalmers and Louis Ramsey, as well as two state government officials in Rep. Ronnie Ryburn Jr. and Senator John F. Gibson. The new administration building was planned to house the chancellor and deans’ offices, the admissions and registrar’s offices, and other student support offices. Overall, the building remains a unique feature on campus next to the other buildings around it, quietly continuing to represent a period of growth and development for UAM in the 1970’s.

The REWIND - #28

Happy Thursday and welcome back to this week’s The REWIND, highlighting interesting people or events from UAM’s History. This week’s post will reflect on a special event for a graduate of UAM which honored the achievement of this alumnus.

With the UAM Class of 2026 Commencement Ceremony that occurred last week, there was the awarding of the Distinguished Alumnus Award to Ms. Classie Jones Green, who was celebrated at the ceremony for her lifetime achievements as a graduate of UAM. That event has given the Special Collections this opportunity to highlight another alumnus who was also celebrated in a similar manner as well, this week back in 1983 at the 50th commencement for UAM overall. That alumna was Madge Moore Youree, who at the time was the 23rd alum to be honored with a Distinguished Award, and was the fourth woman to be honored with this award by UAM. A native of Dumas, she graduated from the university back in 1937 with a degree in Language and Literature. Youree’s long career in Arkansas as the Superintendent of the Arkansas City public school system and her work with education development groups is what led to her recognition for this award.
