In our cellular respiration and photosynthesis unit, biology students investigated how different pigments color the world we live in by performing a chromatography lab on three different types of black markers to discover which ones had true black ink and which were actually rainbow of color

In learning about reaction rates, chemistry students tested different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide with potassium iodide and document each reaction before calculating reaction rate, entropy, enthalpy, and spontaneity!

We’ve been learning about natural and artificial selection in biology. As a fun way to demonstrate the role of camouflage in survival, student were tasked with coloring a butterfly that would blend in somewhere in our classroom. Each class period, another teacher came in to find them! I only got a few photos but each class was complimented on their great attention to detail!

Special thanks to Mrs. Jamie Hutchinson, Mr. Pyles, Mr. Sumpter, and Mr. McKinley for coming to find them and test their skills!

Chemistry students have been learning about energy sources. To wrap up renewable energy, students were tasked with building an electric vehicle (no instructions, 100% their own design). After, we had a race!

Today, chemistry students completed “atomic speed dating” where they took on the persona of an element on the periodic table and determine whether each match was compatible, the type of bond they formed, and drew the bonding structure of the match.

Sorry y’all, I forgot to take a picture right after putting them in so these are not great lol. But Thursday, biology students listened to the story of pumpkin Jack. We spun the wheel each class to determine which class got each pumpkin, then students suggested names and voted to name each class pumpkin. We are currently in our photosynthesis and cellular respiration unit, and will be monitoring our pumpkins throughout the coming months. By the time we reach our ecology unit in the spring, each pumpkin will hopefully have gone full circle and be sprouting new plants!

Before fall break, biology students dissolved and egg shell, leaving behind only the eggs membrane using vinegar to let it dissolve over night. This helped demonstrate a semi-permeable membrane much like is present in our own cells.
