STEM Lab - Monticello Middle School

STEM Lab - Monticello Middle School Follow along as we explore hands-on topics in our lab! We knew the wood shop needed to be used and that kids needed hands-on, Tech Ed experiences again.

Teachers:
Casie Monson (7th Grade STEM)
Jill Kedrowski (8th Grade STEM)

The old wood shop at Monticello Middle School has transformed into the STEM Lab! After a lot of dreaming, then planning, installing, troubleshooting (ongoing 😂), and learning - we now have 18 different STEM career fields that students in 7th and 8th grade can experience. Experiences: Alternative Energy, CAD and Design, Comput

er Graphics and Game Design, Electricity and Electronics, Research and Development (CO2 cars), Medical Imaging, Sports Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Home Maintenance Systems, Home Maintenance Fundamentals, Ophthalmology, Intro to Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Criminalistics, Energy and Power, Flight and Drone, & Structural Engineering. STEM needs to be more than a buzzword! We just needed to figure out how to make it a reality. It is still a work in progress but it’s something we are excited and passionate to share with the students at Monticello Middle School. If you want to follow the STEM Lab social media:

MMS STEM Students did a fantastic job presenting for the Minnesota School Board Association - School Excellence Showcase on Thursday last week!

Students talked to school board members from across the state about our unique lab and the opportunities they have been a part of. We are so proud!

“If the November 4th Operating Levy fails, our projected class size *norms* for academic courses in the district *may* be as follows:
Kindergarten = 25-30
Grades 1-2 = 30-33
Grades 3-5 = 33-35
Grades 6-8 = 35-40
Grades 9-12 = 35-40+”
————————————————————
Not only will students recieve less attention, they are less SAFE. Less supervision in all scenarios creates an environment of stress and uncertainty. If our class sizes are 35-40 we will not be utililizing the lab (if it isnt eliminated anyway) due to safety concerns.

Let’s be clear. These safety concerns are not just for classes like STEM. All classes will have less supervision and less ability for teachers to be on top of behavior issues, conflicts, and/or bullying behavior. That’s in ADDITION to less ability to work with and make connections with students.

Big class sizes are a BIG DEAL. And honestly unacceptable.

It’s been awhile since we’ve posted (took a hiatus from social media) but we are coming back to inform. Please vote to support the MMS STEM Lab! Our budget was already cut by about 25% and materials are not becoming cheaper. We want to continue to provide hands-on, career based and tech ed opportunities for students. If the levy fails, our program is in jeopardy of being cut completely.

Thanks so much to Detective Miller from the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office for speaking to students about Crime Scene Investigation. Detective Miller talked about the importance of questioning everything, problem solving, and attention to details. Students were able to practice casting with AccuTrans and find bullet trajectory with a wall trainer, protractor, and laser. They also got to ask MANY questions about her experiences. IT WAS A HIT!! 🚔👮‍♀️🩸

Thanks for speaking with us, Commissioner!

Commissioner Willie Jett enjoyed a conversation with STEM students from Monticello Public Schools - ISD 882's Middle School STEM Lab. They discussed favorite parts of their school experience, changes that would help students, and what advice students would give to adults.

We are SO excited about these custom-made drywall trainers that were constructed and donated. In addition to monetary donations, we appreciate the community members who donate items that help make these opportunities available for more students. Students will use these trainers to practice hanging frames and shelves, use a stud finder, and patch drywall. Thank you Dan and Freda ❤️🖤
