Good morning, H.A.S. Family!

We are excited to share an incredible opportunity to support our reading initiative at Highland Avenue Elementary. As many of you heard, we were honored to welcome Octavia Spencer to our campus on Wednesday!

Ms. Spencer is an Academy Award–winning actress, author, Montgomery native, proud product of Montgomery Public Schools, and a former student of Highland Avenue Elementary. During her visit, she read aloud her book Detective Dell Is on the Case, and every student received a copy of the book.

She also shared her personal journey—how she once struggled with reading, how encouragement from her Highland Avenue principal helped her develop a love for reading, and how that foundation led her to lifelong success. Her story reminded us that strong readers become strong leaders.

Ms. Spencer introduced a reading program called ELLO, designed to support struggling readers and build confidence and comprehension. The program is currently available and a special scholarship opportunity allows students to subscribe for a low rate per month.

We encourage families to take advantage of this opportunity at home as we work toward bringing ELLO into our school soon. We are incredibly grateful to Octavia Spencer and ELLO for pouring into our Highland Avenue scholars.

This is just the beginning. Our scholars are on the path to success—and one day, they too will return to give back to the school that helped shape their future.

We had an incredible turnout for our Literacy, Math, and STEM Night! Thank you to all the students, families, and staff who showed up with excitement, curiosity, and Eagle pride.
From hands-on STEM challenges to engaging math games and interactive literacy activities, our families truly made the night a huge success. The building was filled with learning, laughter, and teamwork; exactly what Highland Avenue is all about!
A special shout-out to our wonderful teachers and staff for preparing such meaningful activities and a big thank you to the LAMP students who came out to volunteer and support our event. We appreciate you!
