The impact of illiteracy affects us all.
Low literacy costs the U.S. at least $225 billion each year in non-productivity in the workforce, crime, and loss of tax revenue due to unemployment (National Council for Adult Learning).

There are thousands of people in our community who lack the literacy skills to manage everyday tasks. Illiterate individuals are here among us - you probably have crossed paths with them several times this week.

A study by Gallup in September 2020, on behalf of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy found that low levels of adult literacy could be costing the U.S. as much as $2.2 trillion a year.

It's Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, and the Capital Area Adult Literacy Council is joining ProLiteracy's Lifelong Learning campaign to support the millions of American adults learning every day and working to improve their literacy skills.
