Social Work Students had the opportunity to volunteer at the 2026 Children’s Policy Council Conference this week, gaining valuable hands-on experience while engaging with professionals dedicated to improving outcomes for children and families.

Throughout the event, they connected with child welfare professionals, advocates, and legislators. Their participation provided an important opportunity to expand their understanding of child and family policy, and see firsthand how social workers can contribute to advocacy and community change.

Who says a field trip has to leave campus?

Today, Dr. Ashley Cochran’s Intro to Social Work students took their “field trip” right here to The Levi Watkins Learning Center. It was an opportunity to explore the resources available to them and see how those resources can support their education and future careers.

The Learning Center offers so much more than books. Students can access scholarly articles, research databases, reference support, and other tools that help build strong research and information literacy skills.

For future social workers, knowing how to find credible information, understand research, and apply what they learn to real-world practice is an important part of their training.

We love seeing our students take advantage of the resources available right here on campus. Learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom. Sometimes, it’s just a short walk across the yard.

We’re proud to see our Social Work students gaining meaningful, hands-on experience in the community!

Charli Holmes has begun her internship with CASA of the River Region, supporting the important work of advocating for children and families. Experiences like this allow our students to put their classroom knowledge into practice, grow professionally, and make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Here at Alabama State University Bachelor of Social Work Program we encourage our students to continue lifelong learning. That includes expanding their knowledge base wherever that is possible. Two of our students, Carrie Mason and Nicole Cosby, have done just that by recently earning their Master of Social Work at the University of Michigan.

We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and hope they recognize that their achievements not only reflect their individual dedication and perseverance, but also carry forward the legacy of excellence established by Alabama State University’s Department of Social Work.

Yesterday, the Departments of Social Work, Criminal Justice, and Social Sciences, in collaboration with the Federal Defenders of the Middle District of Alabama, hosted a screening of Life for Jeffrey Lee in the Garrick Hardy Student Theatre.

Created by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Debbie Levin, the documentary explores Mr. Lee’s childhood and the shortcomings of the justice system in his case. The screening included a panel discussion featuring Senator Robert Stewart, Ms. Laurel Hattix, Ms. Miriam Bankston, and Dr. Lashawnda Alexander. Mr. Lee, who is incarcerated at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore, Alabama, called during the program to thank students and the audience for their interest in his story and for the opportunity to speak with them. He was convicted in 2000 for capital murder and was sentenced to life in prison without parole, but a judge overruled that decision and sentenced him to death. He's scheduled to be executed on September 17th.

Students reported increased awareness of the complexities surrounding the subject matter and reflected on how the justice system continues to influence contemporary social conditions and the lives of the marginalized. The documentary also provided an opportunity for them to connect course concepts to real-world experiences and to consider the role of social workers in addressing systemic inequities and advocating for individuals, families, and communities.

This event was made possible through the HBCU C.A.R.E.S. grant recently awarded to Dr. Dawna Nelson, Ms. Sharonda Pettaway, and Dr. Ashley Cochran to educate, raise awareness, and increase interest in forensic social work.
