The 4-H Nature Explorers Plant a Lasting Legacy
This morning, the 4-H Nature Explorers Club wrapped up its summer meetings with a lesson that will continue growing for years to come!
Lead by Extension 4-H Agent Amelia Grider, club members planted a white oak tree in front of the Montgomery County Extension Office, with guidance from Galen Grider of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and Capital City Master Gardener Teri Magdon. After learning about native trees and their importance to Alabama's landscape, members gave their new tree a name: Oakley Bob!
Following the planting, the Nature Explorers also played Native Tree Bingo, learned about proper tree care, discovered why soil samples are important and learned more about native trees and their benefits.
Thank you to Mr. Galen and Ms. Teri for helping our young explorers learn about the trees and natural resources right in their own community!
What better way to end a summer of exploring than by planting something that future generations can enjoy? We can't wait to watch Oakley Bob grow!☘️

With 3 and a half weeks left in the challenge and the pounds are really starting to add up! Check our newest leaderboard in the Grow More Give More 250 Pound Challenge.
As of Monday August 10, 2026, we have 44 counties reporting donations. 26 of those counties have met the goal of 250 pounds.
Marshall county is still in the lead but Tuscaloosa and Madison county are making them work hard in the garden to stay ahead. Regardless of where your county is currently we want to thank each person who has grown a little more in the garden to give to their neighbors in need. This challenge is about so much more than a leaderboard. It's about neighbors helping neighbors.
This challenge officially ends Labor Day so keep growing and keep giving! See where your county ranks, learn more, and track your donations at aces.edu/go/250Challenge.
