Happy National Corn on the Cob Day! 🌽☀️
Nothing says summer quite like fresh, sweet corn on the cob at cookouts, picnics, and family gatherings. Whether you enjoy it boiled, grilled, or roasted, corn is a seasonal favorite that brings flavor and fun to the table!
Before you fire up the grill, make sure you’re keeping food safety in mind. From proper cooking temperatures to preventing cross-contamination, safe grilling helps ensure your summer meals are both delicious and healthy.
Thanks to modern appliances, cooking corn inside is faster and easier. You can microwave corn still in their husks or air fry corn that has had their husks and silk removed.

As part of our weekly spotlight series, we’re introducing you to the people who serve our community through the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and help answer everyday questions with research-based information and support.
This week’s spotlight is on Mallory Kelley, Extension Agent in Home Horticulture. If you have been to any of the gardening programs with the Master Gardeners, you have met Mallory
Mallory has worked with Extension for 17 years and serves adults through horticulture education while also coordinating the Alabama Master Gardener Program in Central Alabama, covering Montgomery, Elmore, and Autauga counties.
What she enjoys most about working with Extension/4-H is that every day brings a new adventure and the opportunity to build relationships with the many people she works with.
One service people may not realize Extension provides is the Alabama Master Gardener Volunteer-led helpline, which answers garden and plant-related questions from the community.
Her favorite part of her work is the Master Gardener Program itself, sharing that participants frequently say it is one of the most meaningful experiences they’ve ever had.
Her current favorite thing to grow and work with is hardy, thriving perennials that attract hummingbirds—so she can enjoy watching them in her garden during the early morning and afternoon.
A fun fact about Mallory is that she is the middle of three sisters, grew up singing the Alabama fight song, but all three sisters attended Auburn—War Eagle!
To get involved or learn more, follow your county Master Gardener page (Autauga, Montgomery, and Central Alabama/Elmore) or call/text Mallory at 334-703-9197.
Follow along each week as we spotlight more of the people behind Extension and the programs that strengthen our community!
