This spring, our fifth graders "hit the nail on the head" on Idiom Day! Students dressed up as common idioms, expressing figurative language through non-literal phrases. This fun English Language Arts project was a "piece of cake!" Can you guess all of the idioms our students chose?

Last month, seven STJ Middle School Choral students participated in the Capital City Choral Festival held at First Baptist Church. This festival was created by the Montgomery Chorale, led and directed by STJ alumnus Dr. James Seay '97. Students performed John Rutter's "Look at the World" and "Mass of the Children" alongside choral students from Montgomery area schools, the Montgomery Chorale, and a full orchestra. Saint James High School Counselor, Mr. Andy Clinton, performed with the Chorale and was also a featured soloist. The Montgomery Chorale is one of the city’s oldest musical performing arts organizations and is dedicated to presenting professional quality choral performances in our community.

Last month, we celebrated the retirement of four extraordinary faculty and staff members with a heartfelt farewell reception. These dedicated employees have given many years of service to STJ: Laura Hassell with 10 years, Kiki Hughes with 14 years, and Diane Gilliland with 35 years, and Dane Hawk with 11 years. It was wonderful to have their families, friends, and past colleagues join them in the celebration.
Join us in expressing our deepest gratitude and congratulations to these amazing STJ educators! We will miss you dearly and are excited for your new adventures ahead!

Our own Mrs. Joyce Haven was selected as Alabama Public Television's Teacher of the Month! Mrs. Haven received a $1,000 award, which she plans to use to create a regulation station in her 2nd grade classroom. This space, inspired by the research-based Zones of Regulation program, will serve as a calm, safe area where students can learn to manage their emotions and feelings. This framework, and the intentional spaces designed to support it, helps build emotional regulation and behavioral skills for our youngest learners. The Alabama Public Television Excellence in Education Award is a monthly recognition program for kindergarten through 12th Grade educators across the state of Alabama. Last month, STJ 8th Grade Advanced History students participated in their annual Mock Trial held at the Montgomery County Courthouse.
Presided over by retired Judge Jimmy Pool, students presented the 1920s case of Commonwealth of Massachusetts vs. Sacco and Vanzetti before a jury made up of Saint James APUSH students. While the original trial ended in conviction, today’s jury returned a verdict of not guilty for both defendants.
Students also had the opportunity to hear from Judge Brooke Reid ’99 and Judge Michael Godwin about the court system and intervention programs, while retired attorney and current Saint James grandparent Billy Hill served as deputy sheriff for the proceedings.
From courtroom procedure to critical thinking and public speaking, this hands-on experience led by Mrs. Venna Everett gave students a meaningful look into both history and the judicial process.
