Why did China create a lane just for people using their phones?

In 2014, the city of Chongqing introduced one of the world's first "phone lanes" as a social experiment. Officials noticed that more people were walking while texting, scrolling, and watching videos, which increased the risk of accidents and collisions.

The lane wasn't created to encourage phone use. Instead, it was designed to raise awareness about distracted walking and spark conversations about pedestrian safety in the smartphone era.

The idea quickly gained global attention and became one of China's most talked-about urban experiments.

Would you use a phone lane if your city had one? 📱🚶

Culture Shock series: Filipino

Many Filipinos point with their lips instead of their fingers when giving directions.

One popular folklore explanation traces this custom to beliefs about spirits called Nuno sa Punso, who were thought to live in anthills, mounds, and old trees. Pointing directly with a finger was considered disrespectful, so people used their lips instead.

Today, lip-pointing is still commonly used in everyday conversations across the Philippines, even when giving simple directions.

A small gesture with a fascinating story behind it.
