Congratulations to music alumnus Johntavious Austin on his new position!

The Alabama State University Music Department was well represented at the 2026 Association for Popular Music Education Conference at the University of Miami!

In addition to Dr. Shane Colquhoun's six conference presentations, five ASU students had their music featured and premiered in the Digital Music Showcase. We were also proud to see alumnus Desmond Mitchell bring his pop group from Gadsden State Community College to perform and engage with colleagues from across the country. Alumni Anthony White and Jazmine White joined us as well, taking part in sessions and learning more about the growing field of popular music education.

It's exciting to see our students and alumni making an impact while representing the Hornet Nation with excellence. The future is bright, and we're just getting started.

A Big Bama State welcome to Davon Mattox, coming to ASU all the way from from Shaw High School in Cleveland, Ohio! Davon will be one of our new incoming freshmen music education/percussion majors for the Class of 2030!!!!

Rosephanye Powell’s music is helping tell America’s story.

The Auburn professor has been commissioned to compose a new choral work honoring the 250th anniversary of the United States and the U.S. Army.

The project was commissioned by the West Point Glee Club and marked the final commission initiated by its longtime director before retirement.

But for Powell, the work is more than a national milestone.

Drawing on historic poetry, sacred text and her own words, the composition explores themes of service, unity and love — values that reflect both the mission of West Point and Powell’s own family history of U.S. Army service.

That ability to connect history with living voices is at the heart of Powell’s work as a teacher, composer and scholar.

And now, her music will help commemorate a defining moment in the nation’s story.
