Tons of motor development happens in your baby's first year! 🧠 πŸ’ͺ

Often we're focusing on the more obvious milestones like rolling, sitting, and crawling, but there are fine motor achievements as well. 🀚

This graphic shows the progression of prehension in our little babies. πŸ‘Ά

At first the grasping pattern is more of a gross grasp, where the child uses her palm and most of her fingers for stability. As her hand muscles develop, she incorporates her thumb and first couple of fingers to hold an object, eventually moving toward just the thumb and first finger. The most refined grasping pattern is the fine pincer grasp and most babies are able to demonstrate this grasp by 12 months old. The ability to isolate and coordinate the fingers sets the stage for more advanced dexterity, which will be needed for self-feeding, dressing, and eventually using a pencil. ✏️
