PSA: We are accepting new enrollments throughout July and August for the upcoming 2026-27 school year! Read on to learn all about our provided (daily) morning snack! ๐ฅ๐ฅ
At Honeyberry, snack time looks a bit different then in a traditional school setting. Since Montessori learning is child-led and focused solely around independence, that is exactly the way we operate morning snack time, as well! The snack table is only big enough to seat a couple of children at once. That way, a child is not required to eat at a time they may not feel hungry. Alternatively, children learn patience while waiting for their turn when the seats are all occupied. Throughout the work period, if a child feels ready to eat and a seat at the table is available, he/she will set their spot with a cloth placemat and napkin, as well as a stainless steel tray, cup, and any utensils needed. The child marks their set spot with their name card so others can see it. Then, the child will head over to the food prep table (with tray and cup in tow) to put on the apron and begin prepping what they would like to eat! Every single day, the items that we serve at Honeyberry are certified 100% organic and non-GMO. Some examples of these items that are served throughout the week include grass-fed whole milk (served every morning), fruits, vegetables, grass-fed cheese and yogurt, pasture-raised boiled eggs (from our chickens right outside), sourdough crackers, and homemade baked goods (or other goods) that are made completely from scratch with the highest quality sourced ingredients. Throughout the year, we also serve produce that is harvested right from our farm and greenhouses, as well as other local farms in and around our community! Each day, there will always be an item of food offered that will require the child to "prep" it before eating. Occasionally, that means they need to peel and cut a carrot, peel a clementine, slice bananas or strawberries, slice cheese, dish up berries, drizzle honey, hand juice citrus, pour milk, etc. (Every morning before starting the work period, Ms. Celeste will have the children gather around the food prep area and watch as she demonstrates the proper steps needed to prepare the snack for that day.) After a child has finished eating, they will scrape any leftovers from their tray into the scrap bucket for the chickens. Then, they place their used table linens into the laundry basket and head over to the dishwashing station where they wash/scrub and rinse all of the dishes they used and place them to dry on a bamboo rack! When a spot opens up at the snack table, another child is welcome to have their turn.
Throughout the year, we will often serve snacks from different cultures and have special days to learn all about foods from other countries! Last May, our class got a little taste of this on Cinco De Mayo when we plated up refied beans, chips/salsa, and the children got to each make their own dish of guacamole using all fresh ingredients! It was so fun and delicious!
We are very passionate about real food and a farm-to-table approach at Honeyberry. Teaching children about healthy eating and helping them feel confident with these Practical Life skills is just another asset they can carry on with them in their personal lives outside of school! โค๏ธ
