ZACHARY BANKS ‘08 will serve as the 2026-28 President of the Alabama Vocal Association. The Alabama Vocal Association (AVA) is the choral division of the Alabama Music Educators Association (AMEA), which is the state chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME).

Since 2019, Zach has served as choral director at Ramsay High School. He has also held a chorister position at the Cathedral Church of the Advent in downtown Birmingham.

ORLANDO WILLIAMS ‘16 has been named Chorus Director of the Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra is based in Sugar Land, Texas. Orlando also serves as Director of Choral Activities at the University of Houston-Downtown.

The 2026 Montevallo Music Camp, held June 21-26, was a tremendous success! Thank you to our campers, faculty, staff, and student counselors for making this year’s camp such a rewarding experience. 💜💛

The University of Montevallo Kodály Institute has begun! Twenty-five teachers from seven different states are participating in this two week course, culminating in a final concert at 2:30 on Friday, July 17. You can also join us for a community folk dance on Tuesday, July 14 at 4:30.

The Department of Music mourns the sudden passing of Dr. Gary Packwood, former Professor of Music and beloved choral director. Dr. Packwood’s passion for music, dedication to his students, and lasting contributions to the UM music program and the choral community touched countless lives. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, former students, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
