TILM alumni :

This is a heads-up about the US State Department's attendance of our (in-person) TILM Career Fair. Their primary recruiting interest this year is interpreters, but if you have 5+ years of translation experience, they would like to meet you as well. They have not given interpretation tests since the start of COVID in early 2020, so they are giving priority to MIIS graduates from classes of 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Their current plan (subject to change):

Thursday, 3/2/2023 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm Pacific Time: an in-person info session on MIIS campus

Friday, 3/3/2023 from 9:00 to 12:00: attend TILM Career Fair

Friday, 3/3/2023 from 1:30 to 5:00: office hours for one-on-one meetings (The plan is to have a signup sheet at the Career Fair.)

Please note these opportunities are open to graduates with US citizenship or permanent resident status. Please reach out to me if you have any questions.

Higher Ed Should Enable Students to get an Education AND a Career 09/16/2022

A friend relayed what an Ivy League professor said to her recently: “Students these days seem not interested in getting an education. They flock to engineering and fields that would help them get a job. Parents are responsible for pushing students in this direction.”

As a parent who has just finished paying for her son’s college education and as a Career Advisor in the last 6 years helping graduate students launch into the professional world, I have something to say about this in my latest blog.

Higher Ed Should Enable Students to get an Education AND a Career Image credit: AHA World Campus And I am not talking about getting the “training” (vs. “education”) to make a buck. Hear me out. A friend relayed what an Ivy League professor said to her recently: “…

In Remote Interpretation, Zoom, Teams and WebEx are the Sizzle. Where Then is the Steak? 08/23/2022

My blog post on remote interpretation – how to separate the sizzle from the steak. There is so much more to the excellence of this service than focusing on integration with big tech platforms like Zoom, WebEx & Teams.

In Remote Interpretation, Zoom, Teams and WebEx are the Sizzle. Where Then is the Steak? A recent article introducing access to interpreters via Microsoft Teams has generated discussions on how it may impact LSPs. Should LSPs worry about the big tech firms entering into the language se…

Our heartfelt appreciation to speakers and student attendees at CHIA’s inaugural Student Symposium. Speakers provided invaluable insights and tips on what it’s like working as an inhouse health care translator and interpreter, how to approach one’s freelance career with a successful business mindset, what’s the “division of labor” between freelance linguists and LSPs, how to navigate the employment and financial landscape, and what hiring managers look for when selecting inhouse teams. From the questions raised by students, it is clear that these are well-prepared and highly motivated professionals about to enter our community. A great event all around! More than 50 students benefited from this event. Bravo! CHIA!

I am looking forward to attending and presenting at Globalization and Localization Association 2022 conference next week.

"How to scale a business" is a top-of-mind issue for executives regardless of their line of business. With the diverse stakeholders to manage, business leaders lose sight of the core functions that will enable their quest for growth. It's not about hoping for the best outcome. It's not about running faster than your competitors. It's about a methodical (and yet agile) approach to focus on the right functions and leverage technology to maximize the output.

Job Security Is An Illusion: Real Security Comes From Continuous Reinvention 04/19/2022

Why do I say job security is an illusion? How do you increase the chance of being the one exercising at-will employment rather than letting it happen to you? Here is my blog post on the subject.

Job Security Is An Illusion: Real Security Comes From Continuous Reinvention Graduation season is fast approaching. I am privileged to be having critical conversations about their first jobs with my students. What brings me joy: My students are receiving job offers and, in …
