Community Members,

For 27 years, Monterey Peninsula College has hosted the African American Theater Arts (AATAT) from University of California Santa Cruz to bring live theater, with an emphasis on African American culture and heritage, to our Peninsula cities. This years' annual performance is called, School Girls or the African Mean Girls Play.

Jocelyn Bioh’s award-winning comedy follows a group of schoolgirls vying for the title of Miss Ghana 1986. Pretty, popular Paulina is the queen bee of the Aburi Girls Boarding School, but her reign is threatened when the pageant recruiter is more interested in Ericka, the new transfer student from Ohio with a “more universal and commercial look.” Inspired in part by the real-world controversy surrounding the 2011 Miss Universe Ghana pageant—where a fair-skinned, American-born woman went on to win the title—School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play is an exploration of colorism and teenage ambition that’s “funny and fast-paced...[with] bouncy, juicy dialogue” (Vulture).

“It’s joyful, it’s youthful, it’s heartbreaking!

The African American Theater Arts Troupe (AATAT) is the only student African American theater troupe in the University of California system of ten campuses. For thirty years, AATAT has produced outstanding performances of playwrights such as Lorraine Hansberry, August Wilson, and Dominique Morisseau. Equally important is a unique place created by AATAT where African American students of all majors connect with their histories and find their voices.

A special performance for Monterey Peninsula College is scheduled for Saturday, March 6th at 7pm. There will be a live introduction to the show (6:45pm) and a talkback immediately following the evening performance at the following link:

Important GI Bill Update: Request to Hold Enrollment Changes Due to COVID-19

Seal of the US Department of Veterans Affairs

Dear School Certifying Official,

Legislation is still pending regarding COVID-19 and how it may impact GI Bill students. We continue to ask your support in not reporting any enrollment updates due to COVID-19 at this time. Our processing offices will be making no adjustments to student’s awards regarding COVID-19 until further notice..

As a reminder, Education Service has determined that students who have started their enrollment period and attended at least in part as resident training are eligible to continue to receive the MHA at the in-resident rate for the entire enrollment period.

We will provide guidance to you in the coming days based on Congressional action.

If your GI Bill students have questions about their specific circumstance, please have them contact the Education Call Center at: 1-888-442-4551 between 8 AM and 7 PM Eastern Time, Monday-Friday.

Respectfully,

Education Service
