In May, students at the Monterey Japanese Language School celebrated Children’s Day, explored the wonders of space, and took part in several special community moments.
Students performed “Ōkina Kabu” and sang “Arigatō no Hana” during the JACL 100th Anniversary commemoration. They were also recognized in a certificate ceremony, celebrating their hard work and growth throughout the school year.
For Children’s Day, students learned about the meaning of こどもの日 through kamishibai, picture cards, the “Koinobori” song, a carp streamer craft, and a taste of kashiwa mochi. They also began a new monthly theme, “Space and the Solar System,” learning the names and features of the sun and eight planets through songs, photo cards, and hands-on sorting activities.
5月、モントレー日本語学校の生徒たちは、こどもの日をお祝いし、宇宙の不思議について楽しく学び、地域の特別な行事にも参加しました。
JACL100周年記念式典では、「大きなかぶ」の発表と「ありがとうの花」の歌を披露しました。また、修了証の授与式も行われ、子どもたち一人ひとりの1年間の頑張りと成長をみんなでお祝いしました。
こどもの日には、紙芝居や写真カード、「こいのぼり」の歌、こいのぼりクラフト、柏餅の試食を通して、こどもの日の意味を学びました。
また、5月のテーマ「宇宙 と 太陽系」については、太陽と8つの惑星の名前や特徴を、歌や写真カードの並べ替えのアクティビティを通して楽しく学びました。

In April, students at the Monterey Japanese Language School enjoyed learning about spring, nature, and the connections between language and community. Through songs like “Umi,” they explored seasonal changes, weather, and new kanji such as 花 and 天, while building vocabulary through games, relays, and creative activities.
A special highlight of the month was a guest speaker, Rev. Murakami, from Monterey Peninsula Buddhist Temple, who shared thoughtful lessons about gratitude, mindfulness, and listening to others, as part of Hana-matsuri. (the anniversary of the birth of Buddha)
Students also learned about the history of Japanese Americans in Monterey and explored sea life through interactive activities.
4月、モントレー日本語学校の生徒たちは、春や自然、そしてことばと地域とのつながりについて楽しく学びました。「海」の歌を通して、季節の変化や天気に親しみ、漢字「花」や「天」も学びながら、ゲームやリレー、創作活動を通して語彙を広げました。
また特別に、僧侶の村上さまがMonterey Peninsula Buddhist Templeからゲストスピーカーとして来校してくてました。4月のお釈迦さまの誕生日、花祭りの一環で、「感謝すること」や「心を落ち着けること」、そして「人の話をよく聞くこと」など、大切なことを分かりやすく教えていただきました。
他には、子供たちはモントレーにおける日系人の歴史について学び、海の生き物についても体験的な活動を通して理解を深めました。
