MilestoneZine: Literary Arts Journal of East L.A. College

MilestoneZine: Literary Arts Journal of East L.A. College Lit arts journal representing the voices of ELAC through fiction, non-fiction, poetry, & art since 1

Milestone, sponsored by the English Department, has a historical presence on the ELAC campus. Each year, the journal has solicited material from ELAC students, who represent the community voices expressing their feelings and concerns in the form of personal narrative (creative non-fiction), short stories, and poetry. In 2003 with the College budget shortfall, the Foundation stepped forward to support the printing and marketing of the time honored literary publication. The close cooperation of the Milestone Committee Chair, the late Carol Lem, graphic designer Patricia Glover and the Foundation helped produce a version of Milestone that is unparalleled to past years’ production of the literary book. The ELAC Art department is also credited for providing beautiful student art work for the graphics and covers for the 2003 publication. This book is available for sale at the ELAC Bookstore and Foundation. Copies of Milestone are on-sale at the ELAC Bookstore, (323) 265-8720

POETRY

"Just Fears"
Matthew Mejia
© 2015 Milestone

In Matthew Mejia's entire life people have told him how easy it was and that he just needed to stand up and "scream." But as far too many of us know, it's still hard to just take someone's word for it. The month's prior to writing, he was still recovering from his failed relationship and breaking in his newfound courage. He felt all over the place, helpless and hopeless. But most recently, he discovered a beacon of possible future happiness, and made the choice to face his demons. He realized the fear that crippled him for so long was simply that - a fear. So he tested himself both mentally and emotionally to see if he could think and manage to create something that he knew would give him a feeling that he had been afraid of for quite awhile.

Brenda Morones loves to express herself through words and believes in their power to help people empathize with others (her major is Psychology). She enjoys writing about her feelings and about the hardships she's had to overcome growing up. Being an AB-540 student made it hard for Morones to go to a 4-year university. One person who has encouraged her most is her mother. Morones also likes taking walks around the park.
