High Marq Environmental Charter School

For our Field Day, two weeks ago, we went to the John Muir Preserve to explore pond studies! We studied the pond ecosystem and discovered the amazing plants and animals that call it home. We dove into the littoral, limnetic, and benthic zones. When we returned to the school, we observed each of these zones on the microscopic level. It was a wet, muddy, and wonderfully fun day filled with hands-on learning!

For our second Field Day of the year, we had our annual prairie seed collection day at John Muir Park. We worked with the Ice Age Trail Alliance to learn about and collect native prairie seeds which they will use to re-seed other prairies throughout Wisconsin. When we got back to the classroom, as a bonding activity, each field team created a nature emblem for themselves.

For our first Field Day of the year, our students learned about forage fish. We started the day off in the classroom learning about how to preserve a healthy, and stable, forage fish population. We then walked to Montello Park to perform a survey of the many forage fish species found in Lake Montello. We finished off the day with our first Phenology of the year.

For a Fledging activity, our students built boats out of used tri-fold boards to float in Montello Lake. They built these in teams and were judged on 3 things. (Teamwork, creativity, and how well it floats) Here are some hilarious pictures of them building their boats and floating them.

For our 32nd Field Day (which Ms. May forgot to post) we had a lakeshore ecology day in the canoes! Despite the wind, our students had a great time paddling around and learning about the shoreline ecosystems. Enjoy your summer everyone!

High Marq had our 2026 graduation ceremony yesterday! We are so proud of or seniors and so grateful for everyone who helped make this happen. Congratulations class of 2026! We love you!!

Senior Spotlight:
Lanson Larson joined High Marq as a 7th grader, and he self-identifies as the face of our school. He is extremely driven, and he worked hard to complete most of his credits in the first couple years of high school. Landon started his college journey early, through the Start College Now program, and has gained 18 college credits in his last two years of high school. Throughout high school, he worked in our school's tech office, to prepare for his chosen career route. Landon is graduating with Academic Honors and has earned the title of High Marq's 2026 Valedictorian. After graduation, Landon will be studying Computer Engineering at UW-Platteville and plans to pursue that as a career. Congratulations, Landon! We are so proud of you!
