Out and about: 🌱 The Green Team representing the Township of Washington were at the NJ community center surveying residents about the their perceptions of the importance of tree canopy and its impact on health in the community.
The team also conducted surveys with the community in several other places: a local shopping center, the Township of Washington Public Library, and during the “America 250 Freedom Fest event” hosted by the township.
Dense tree canopy can mitigate things like the “Urban Heat Island Effect” wherein a lack of trees contributes to overall surface temperatures rising.
Dense tree canopy also helps to filter harmful pollutants out of the air, absorb carbon dioxide emissions, and provides homes for local wildlife!

Though the majority of interns’ time is spent doing the hard work of research and quantifying data, It’s moments like these that remind us what sustainability is all about.🌱

Juneteenth has been celebrated in the United States among Black Americans since 1865 and became a national holiday in 2021.
It commemorates the end of slavery in Galveston, Texas, where enslaved Black Americans were prohibited from learning about the emancipation proclamation signed a full two years prior.
