If you’ve had the pleasure of witnessing an 8th grade graduation at the Co-op, you know that tradition gives each student the chance to make a speech reflecting on their time at the Co-op and bidding it farewell. You’d also know that nearly every speech mentions Kroka at some point.
It is a challenging trip. Co-op students and their teachers go off the grid on a wilderness expedition in New Hampshire, where learning comes alive through expedition travel, community service, farming, crafts and hands-on discovery. Nights can be cold, the river is wet, and kids are put to work. Creature comforts are left at home.
As Kroka Expeditions puts it, “This is not your typical field trip: we embrace risk, we welcome discomfort, and we shed the layers between ourselves and the natural world.” Our students come home with newfound confidence and a new light in which to see themselves, their classmates and their place in the world. The class community they build out there stays with them long after the trip.
Ask the kids, and many will tell you: it’s the hardest trip, and the best one.
