I've actually been on both sides of this.
There was a time when I thought, “I have a relationship with God. I don't necessarily need
to go to church or be around other believers. I can read my Bible and have my relationship
with God myself.”
But that was still me doing it my way.
Then I experienced the other side.
Going to church. Doing the religious activities. Checking the boxes. And if I didn't do
everything right, I felt terrible—as though my performance was what made me acceptable
to God.
Neither one is the Gospel.
I can't save myself by rejecting religious activity, and I can't save myself by performing
religious activity.
Luke 18 shows us a Pharisee who did plenty of religious things, but his confidence was in
himself.
The publican simply cried:
“God be merciful to me a sinner.”
The Gospel keeps bringing me back to this:
My salvation isn't about what I can do for God. It's about what Christ has already done
for me.

WHO ARE YOU REALLY TRUSTING?
One thing I had to admit during our Light House session is that I've trusted myself more
than I realized.
And it doesn't always look like saying, “I don't need God.”
Sometimes it looks completely di􀆯erent.
I can pray, read my Bible, go to church, and do all the things that look right—and still find
myself depending on what I'm doing instead of what Christ has done.
That's what stood out to me again in Luke 18.
The Pharisee was religious. He prayed. He fasted. He gave.
But Jesus said he “trusted in himself that he was righteous.”
And as I looked at this passage, I didn't want to just look at the Pharisee and say, “That's
him.”
I had to ask:
Where does this show up in me?
That's a question worth asking ourselves.
Who am I really trusting?

Something hit me differently as we were talking during our Light House session.

𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗲.

And when I say everything, I mean 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴.

He knows the things I've done that I'm not proud of. He knows the mistakes I've made. He even knows the thoughts that crossed my mind that I never acted on and nobody else ever knew about.

And yet...

𝗛𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗲.

That does something to me when I really think about it.

Because sometimes I can look at my failures and condemn myself. I can think about what I should have done differently or where I've fallen short.

But even that can put too much focus on me.

The Gospel reminds me that my hope was never supposed to be in how good I could make myself.

𝗠𝘆 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘂𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁.

He knew exactly who I was when He went to the cross.

Romans 5:8 reminds us that while we were 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝘀.
He didn't wait for me to get everything right first.

So I'm learning not to put my confidence in how good I've been—and not to lose hope because of how badly I've failed.

𝗜'𝗺 𝗽𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲.

Think about this:

𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂.

Not just what other people know.

He knows the mistakes.
He knows the failures.
He knows the thoughts you never told anyone about.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂.

That is what makes the Gospel such good news.

Our hope is not that we've been good enough to earn God's love. 𝗥𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝟱:𝟴 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝘀.

Jesus already knew who He was dying for.

So instead of trusting in your own goodness—or condemning yourself because you've fallen short—𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗛𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂.

That's where our hope is.

There is a common misunderstanding that can quietly distance us from faith, and that is the expectation of perfection. We mistakenly believe that we must fix every flaw before we can come to God, or that having faith means we will never make another mistake.

When we look closer at the truth, we find a very different perspective:

• We are welcomed in our flaws. God desires our hearts exactly as they are right now, not a polished version we try to create on our own.
• Growth comes through the journey. We are not going to be flawless, but we are forgiven, and that is where our true freedom lies.
• Hard times still happen. Faith does not make our surroundings perfect, but it ensures we have a constant presence to guide us through the trials.

When we let go of the pressure to be perfect, we finally open the door to genuine healing and growth.

For years, I carried a quiet weight, thinking that I had to achieve a certain level of perfection before I could truly connect with God. It is a trap that many of us fall into, leading to a deep sense of internal condemnation when we inevitably fall short.

We often believe the lie that our flaws disqualify us. But the truth of the gospel is that we are invited to come as we are. Relationship with God does not demand perfection from us, nor does it mean our circumstances will suddenly become perfect. We will still face trials, but we have the promise that we will never face them alone.

Are you really living your best life?

We hear that phrase all the time - but Sunday's Redefining Life teaching challenged us to think about what it actually means.

If our “best life” can be taken away by circumstances, possessions, age, or ultimately death...can it really be our best life?

Jesus didn't come merely to improve our temporary circumstances.

He came to give us life.

And through Christ, our greatest life is the life death cannot take away.

Watch this week's teaching and consider what God says about the difference between what is temporary and what is eternal.

The way a parent looks at their child tells us so much about the heart of God.

When a parent hears their child has done something wrong, their first instinct is often to defend them. They see the angel in them even when the behavior says otherwise. While we as humans might not always be right in that assessment, it reminds me so much of how our Father looks at us.

We tend to be our own harshest critics. We let our flesh and the enemy remind us of every mistake and every past failure. We walk around feeling condemned and heavy with shame. But that is not how the Lord sees us at all.

Because of Christ, he sees us through the lens of righteousness. He does not see the sin, he sees who we are in him. There is no condemnation for those of us who are in Christ Jesus. That is the freedom we all need to finally let go of the past and step into our purpose.

I was thinking recently about how easily things can slide when we stop being intentional. We see it in our homes, our work, and certainly in our faith.

When we stop investing time into our relationship with the Lord, that feeling of distance starts to creep in. It is not that God has left us, but that we have allowed our attention to drift elsewhere.

The principle is simple: focus brings life, while neglect brings decline. But because of Jesus, we always have the opportunity for reconciliation and a fresh start.

What is one area of your life where you want to be more intentional with your attention this week?

We often think we need to be more creative or more original to make an impact. We put so much pressure on ourselves to come up with the next great idea.

But our own ideas only go so far. I have found that the real power comes when we stop trying to be the source and start being the vessel for a Word that is inexhaustible.

The Bible is the ultimate content strategy. It is the only source that never runs out of material and never loses its relevance. It has stood the test of time and speaks to every person in every situation.

When we tap into the Word, we find that God is always speaking. There is always something new to learn and something valuable to share.
